Hi there.. Im new to here and would really like some help if its possible

 

I have a breeding pair of budgies, they're very affectionate and she keeps laying about 5 eggs, then after a few weeks they're doin the deed again and shes rolling out the eggs to make room for new ones. They are in a little aviary, about 1.2 x 1.2 by 1.8 high. They are well fed and seem very healthy. There is also 4 wiros in the cage that breed as well, they have no troubles in laying and bringing up there babie. Do i need to seperate the budgies and give them there own cage??? or is it they just dont want little ones?. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Ian and welcome

 

In answer to your question..........yes, I would seperate them if you want breeding success. The aviary you have is not large by any means and to have 4 breeding weiros and two breeding budgies in it is hoping for a little too much. I would consider you aviary suitable for only one pair of weiros breeding not two and not counting the budgies. Chances are the budgies are being disturbed in the nestbox by the weiros. Are the budgies over 12 months of age ?

I have no idea what a weiro is but I agree with kaz. The cage is to small for 3 breeding pairs of birds.

A weiro or weero is the western australian name for a tiel.

thankyou for your replies, i was given all these birds so im very much a newbe... I was told the budgies are about 17 months old.. What size cage or aviary is recomended for budgies??? i have one thats .5 square and 1.2 high, would that be okay???

The cage you mentioned for your budgies is close to a breeding cage size...a little wider would be better, but you should be fine if you mount the nestbox to the outside with access from inside into the nestbox hole. Outside makes it easier for checking the nestbox.

If you look in our cages setups etc forum, and look for topics by member Daz, he shows step by step building of breeding cages...might be helpful

have you only jsut been given the birds? maybe remove the box and let them rest/ settling in if that is the case. moving to a new area can add stress to the birds which isn't healthy for breeding.

 

If you have had them longer than make sure she has some calcium as the production of eggs may have reduced that in her body.

i have had them for about 5 months now. She seems to lay 5 to 6 eggs then after a while rolls them out then lays more. They seem very happy but as what has been said befor i will move them to there own little bungalow for quiet time

Why grit and shells ?

Budgies do not need shell grit. They have internal mechanisms to grind down their seed. Unlike other birds which need grit to grind their seed inside.

i just modified my cage and put the breeding box on the outside and moved daph and jack from the wieros cage into it

 

 

as far as the grit goes i was told it helps when laying eggs, with the calcium, but if no good then i wont use

Any chance you could rejig the cage so it is horizontal and not vertical ?

 

Sorry , Ian for possibly sounding negative on your cage....and after all your hard work too. But vertical is a finch and canary thing and horizontal is best for budgies. They like to fly across the cage in displays of mating behaviour with perches each side so they can. If you make the cage horizontal it gives them room to fly to show off for breeding, it also gives parents room to fly for exercise, and babies room to fly when they come out of the nestbox and learn to fly. Also at that stage you can add some little ladders which the babies like when they first leave the nest. Make sure the perches are a good diameter for gripping ( 16 mm or so ) for mating and also not wobble around.

Good luck Ian. If you can make the cage lye horizontal like kaz said it would be the best option as budgies need to fly longways, the dont fly up.

its amazing all the different things there are to know, ill keep them in there till i build another cage over the weekend

Too hard to turn it sideways ?

It's an excellent cage Ian I think it would be fairly easy to turn it sideways. Attach the nest box with hooks or somthing, the main thing is that its sturdy.
