Posted April 5, 200916 yr Well a week or so ago I lost Lip, (the first budgie I owned along with Len) She was at MB's house to breed and MB lost a cock too... I went over looked at the babies and decided to pick up Len. Well I came home tonight and I went out to see how Len was doing, a bird that looked healthy this morning looked like it was going to die right there in front of me... Poor thing... I've called the avian vet but that went through to message bank... grrr. It looks like I'll be losing 2 birds in as many weeks... Really bad night.
April 5, 200916 yr Author It is so hard to watch him like this... I've tried to make him as comfortable as possible but its not changing the situation much... :grouphug: I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to be budgieless until I pick up the chick up from MB later this month/early next month...
April 5, 200916 yr Author I didn't get an Autopsy done but a swab of the vent area showed up Canker... I have been doing the quarantine program since bringing Len back home but I guess it isn't enough... He has a lamp... :grouphug: I really am not enjoying this experience... I've never had a pet before these two and I'm not liking parting with them. I know that when I get my bird room up and start breeding that there will be deaths sometimes but these two are my first birds so they have a real place in my heart. If I had a chick from Len it might be slightly different but he was a great looking bird and I didn't get any chicks out of him. At least Lip will live on in the chicks
April 5, 200916 yr So you are doing the Roni-Vet thing? Budgies are so good at hiding their illnesses, that you often do not know when they are really sick. I was at the vet the other day, and he said ot me "With birds, we learna lot more from an autopsy of them than we do a checkup". It is sad but true.
April 5, 200916 yr I am so sorry JB What a horrible thing - I know how much you love your birds - this is such a disaster I hope the chicks pull though for you and you can get something out of this terrible loss
April 5, 200916 yr JB, sorry to hear about your disappointments / other loss - I'm only glad Liv takes good care of ours otherwise I'd be just like you - somewhat in the dark as to what to do. She bought a microscope to check out disease and treat our birds, but I found out you still need a ready supply of anti-biotics and treatments, more than I thought possible. Hoping your liitle-un does well in the night and pulls through.
April 5, 200916 yr Oh I'm so sorry what sad news, they were such beautiful birds - Len is such a stunner I hope he can get through the night and see a vet and live on to give you many lovely chicks
April 5, 200916 yr Author just tried the link to the quarantine that I was talking about and it didn't work so this is it... http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...&artlang=en hopefully that works..
April 6, 200916 yr Big hugs JB, I am so sorry Did he contract the canker at MB's? or do you think he had it? Asking as a precaution has MB had her birds checked since she lost one too?
April 6, 200916 yr Author We don't know when Lip or MB's cock got it... And really now that we've lost them its not really any use trying to blame each other. I'm not sure if MB has checked her other birds for it or not... I would say she has. Update on Len, he is still a very sick boy but is hanging in there on meds... I'm not getting my hopes up but trying to do everything I can to help him out. I've read so much information on here, but a situation like this you are not prepared for until you actually have to deal with it. Its been a steep learning curve...

I didn't think you were, sorry if it came across like that, I would say that MB is treating her birds, but I don't know. This is the only bird that I've got here at the moment and hopefully the meds will do they're thing
April 7, 200916 yr Author honestly a couple of nights ago I thought for sure he was gone... He has lost HEAPS of weight, I've got him eating sunflower seeds and a bit of barley as I think they are high fet seeds just to try and help him increase the weight again... The meds must be helping too... I know that birds can look like they are on the improve but then they go south... hopeing that doesn't happen... I
April 7, 200916 yr Might be a very good time to read this article >M.A.P.< I have birds that are in quarrentine and will be so for the next 5 weeks. I can't afford to let anything into my aviary. JB hope he pulls through. Try him on some millet sprays.
