Posted April 4, 200916 yr Hi troops, I have purchased Avitrol Bird Mite and Lice Spray from a pet shop. Any thoughts on this "off the shelf" product's usefulness? Many thanks in advance for any replies.
April 4, 200916 yr I use it too. Always works well - it has a wetting agent in it (which is good) and really wets them to the bone so make sure you do it on a hot day or are prepared to keep the birds under a heat light until completely dry.
April 4, 200916 yr Author No Kaz, no symptoms, very happy bird. Purely preventative measures. Cool? Any other periodic preventative measures one should take?
April 4, 200916 yr Treat for mites only if you find them. No need to spray for preventative measures.
April 4, 200916 yr Kaz is their any preventative medication you can give the bird to prevent mites? Like a tablet that makes the birds feathers stink so mites dont go near them?
April 4, 200916 yr Kaz is their any preventative medication you can give the bird to prevent mites? Like a tablet that makes the birds feathers stink so mites dont go near them? Mites only affect birds low on their natural defences and who are susceptible. Red mites can affect all birds if introduced. There really is nothing you should be putting on a bird unless he actually has mites. Treat as you find.
April 18, 200916 yr Treat for mites only if you find them. No need to spray for preventative measures. Â Â I disagree Kaz - Unless you can thoroughly examine each bird for mite its very hard to know if and when they have mites. Most breeders worm there birds regularly without testing for worms. Â I regularly spray mine with a mite spray regardless if mites are visible or not.
April 19, 200916 yr Ah well.... :hooray: I guess my regular treatments work for most things anyway....some of the things like S76 in the water treat for all kind of parasites dont they ? What I was getting at it was about the spraying mite and lice treatments off petshop shelves...I didnt see the need to buy it and spray a singular bird at home unless it had visible mites, thats all.
April 19, 200916 yr Yes so true Kaz,only one bird, if there are no mites, its not going to catch mites.Out of the air.
April 19, 200916 yr Mites, worms?....we don't find this in singular birds at least here in the US. In fact, I have never even heard of worming a bird until just a couple months back on here. I am not even sure if they do this in US.
