Long Term Feeding

Featured Replies

I've just found out we are going to Queensland in September for two weeks :( . But I don't know how to feed the budgies while we're away. Neighbours are out of the question. So what do you do when you go away?

nitsuD :D

For two weeks you would need someone to take care of them. My mate feeds mine when I go away. I would leave them alone for 2-3 days at most. Somthing could happen in nests or one bird could get a disease. Or a snake could even get in the aviary and kill all the birds by the time you get back.

My only suggestion is to get someone to come around every 2-3 days to check on them an top up seed and water.

Those big seed bells would be good.

I wouldnt use the seed bells...junk food for budgies and half of them are put together with glues.

But you will as Pearce suggested need them checked on every other day or so and food and water renewed.

I make mine myself.

You will need someone to check in and make sure your birds are okay. in regard to seed bells, I too stopped using them due to the glue, but you can make your own. there are recipes on here that you can use, or someone actually emailed me one today.

Seed Bells.

Make a smooth paste with two tablespoons of plain flour and four tablespoons of cold water, then mix in a cup of birdseed. Put mixture onto a sheet of greased cooking foil and shape into ball with a wire holder in the centre. Coat hanger wire is ideal. Scrunch foil up to the top of the ball, leaving it slightly open at the top, then bake at 160C for about 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking for another 15 minutes. Turn oven off and leave seed ball in until it cools.

Wouldn't all that baking destroy the proteins in the seed??

Thanks everyone for the replies, I think I will give them home made seed bells as well as getting someone to feed them every 3 days or so. :(
