Annual MOULT!!!!

:)

Last night while cleaning my aviaries i noticed the HUGE increase of feathers around the place and just had to share.

There are clumps like this everywhere around my back yard

And a stack in the aviary

Even the poor quail can not escape being feathered.

Oh, and not to mention my lawn!!

The birds are not looking really moulty yet, but i will be sure to post photos of their scruffy faces when they are.

Please share your feathery April photos too :D

Happy birthday for tomorrow Leanne :)

Unlike other moults throughout the year, where budgies shed some feathers, the April moult is when a budgie will shed every single feather on its body. This is the most stressful moult of the year and requires the most attention as its also when temperatures are getting colder. (personally i think they should reschedule it to be in the middle of summer )

They get very scruffy and stressed and sore with new pin feathers. Some that are weaker or have underlying issues don't make it though.

They need a quality diet filled with protein, amino acids and vitamins for healthy feather growth. ( i put a roast chicken carcass in my aviary today and it looks like Parana's have attacked it  )

I'd heard of people doing that before, but today I did the same thing... well not a whole carcass for one bird but some of it... We will see how it goes :)

Happy birthday for tomorrow Leanne :(Thankyou Liv.

Mmm, maybe I should bring my little fellas inside, especially the one that is not well at the moment.

That's a lot of feathers Liv!!!!!! :D

And my birthday too is in April...the 21st.

Wow people do get busy in April...ha ha ha!

I might sound silly asking, but why put a chicken carcass in the aviary? It sounds a bit cannibalistic to me. :(

Chicken is to budgie as human is to cow.

Birds are a variety of animal like mammals. Cannibalism is only when budgie eats budgie or human eats human :D
