Hi

Today I bought some new seed. It is a 20kg bag of riverina breeders bird seed. It doesnt look as good as my previous bird seed but it looks okay..

Anyone used it before?

Heres a picture.

What are the little black seeds? If you know the name of each different seed in the mix please tell me.

Canary mix. ^_^ the black seeds are canola and the budgies wont eat them.

yes, the other seeds are fine.

It is not the best for breeding birds however as the canary seed ratio is too low. You want at least 1/3 to 1/2 canary seed for breeding budgies. Other parts white millet and jap millet.

Riverina seed mix is made by Howard Martin from Berrigan. Agree with Liv's comments not enough Canary seed. Looks to be predominatley White French Millet.

Heath how do you get your bird seed? do you buy it or make it yourself?

My friend has gone away so he was unable to make some up for me this month.

Pearce - I prefer to mix my own seed. I like my seed mix to contain Red Pannicum, which most seed mixtures dont contain.

50% Canary, 20% Jap Millet, 20% White French Millet 5% Pannicum and 5% Red Pannicum.

Howard Martin has their ordianary budgie mix and they have their Riverina Mix which is meant to have more canary seed in it than the normal mix as I buy the Riverina Mix formualed buy Ron Blizzard well that is what i have been told.

Anyway if you go to Howard Martin and ask for a bag or 2 of budgie mix you will only gey the normal mix you have to go to the office and ask for the Riverina mix which is kept down the back away from the normal mix .

And every bag I have bought does have a lot of canary seed in it so I doubt very much that the bag Pearce has bought is from the same company and if so I would be complaining about it.

Buy some plain canary seed & mix it with the seed,By the look of it they forgot to put the canary in,

I buy budgie seed in 20kg bags from Barristock. I can't say I've looked that closely at what's in it. It's very fresh compared to the garbage you buy at the supermarket.

On that note, what are those orange seeds you see in cheap rubbish mixes? Budgies never eat them. These ones:

The picture shows red millet, but I think you might be referring to sorghum or milo.

It's cheap filler material, makes the box heavier but it's too hard for them to crack.

Yeah it's ridiculous that they put that stuff in when the birds don't/can't eat it. And cheapo home brand seed is always so hard, dried out and dusty. I'm surprised they're even allowed to sell it as birdseed.
