My Budgies Don't Like Outside Time..

Featured Replies

Whenever I let them out they will just wander around for a few minutes and then try to get back to their cage.. and it happens everytime! When I was a little kid I owned several budgies and they loved to fly around the house and eventually they would go back to their cage by themselves..

So what's going on with this budgies? I thought maybe they were afraid of the outside world!? so they just try to go to their safe place..which is their cage. I don't even try to take them out anymore.. They can still fly around in their cage and get enough exercise so I figured it would be okay.. :D

They are scared, simple as that.

Should I try to encourage them to be outside or just let them be?

If you'd like to see them fly around the house, you could start by making them some kind of play stand with perches and toys on it. Put that a short distance away from their cage, and then put the birds on it. They might be scared at first, but they will come to see the play stand as another "safe place". After a while, they will get brave and start making little flying jaunts, probably back and forth to the cage.

I have a baker's rack that has turned from plant stand to budgie stand, and it is about 4 feet from their cage. If I put one or two of my birds on it, the ones left in the cage will call back and forth, and then get brave enough to leave the cage and go to the stand. Lately, now that some of them are growing back their flight feathers, they have started doing a little flying. :D

Thanks :D I'll try that.

..and thanks for replying to most of my posts Finnie you are so helpful!

Sorry to use a four letter word, but do you have... CATS

Play stands are awesome for outside time. I have one that sits on the top of the cage. The cage door is always open and they just come and go as they please. 2 out of three of my inside budgies come out of the cage to play. the last one is not tame and will never come out on his own.

Yes I have a cat, but she is an outside cat and she only comes in when we let her and of course I would never let my birds near her! She is a pretty good hunter.. and I also have a dog inside but she will never harm my birds If I'm there.. and the birds never come out unless I'm supervising. So as far as that goes my birds are safe from my cat and my dogs :(

adding to Finnie, excellent advice, have treats out there they they really like too :D that encourages them. Also I had this same problem, when I let my birds out I actually covered the cage so it would get them used to being out or I removed the cage so I could redirect their minds to another place that is safe. Once you can do that make sure you have a good way to figure to get them back in :(...make sure they are all at least dowel stick trained so you can have them hop on it and go back in, you may think you will never have that problem but you will once they gain confidence of the outside world.
