can you tell me the name of the pet shop plz i live in mackay and go up to Rockhampton all the time

Sure - it's Rocky Pet World, in the Red Hill center, I think you would have to come past it if you're coming down from Mackay - it's on the north side of town.

It's not somthing you see often from a pet shop, its good that your local one is excellent. Uusually the store assistant who has no knowledge about birds tells you to get the wrong things etc... birds in poor condition, not fed well. They are 2 excellent birds I would be happy with them.

The girl was quite happy to catch the blue hen and let me have a look over her.. she didn't try to "sell" them to me, she just let me look them over, let me see their faces and their feet etc, and we chatted a little. It was nice and relaxed, she didn't make me feel like I was being picky :)

It just really made me happy when I saw all the birds with fresh greens - I don't think I've ever seen a pet store give anything other than the bare minimum in terms of food.

nice birds :) I thought the first one was Violet too and I thought clearbody for the second... Surprise surprise I might of been right for a change :D

I think the first bird is an opaline visual violet dominant pied hen.

I think the second bird is an opaline yellow based texas clearbody hen.

the tail argument is irrelevant for black or blue here as the texas clearbdy's have a tail that goes from black down to grey, much like the wings. Check out the flights to see what I mean.

Great looking birds. I would love to have more hens that looked like that.

can someone show me this? my yellowface TBC still has a blue tail, i can find a few online shots also showing blue tails for green tbc's. Only reason i'm questioning this is becuase i don't recall any comments about tbc having black tails only...and yes i've read a lot of genetics. not saying i can't learn something new but i've not found the evidance to proove what you and others are saying.

I believe I was wrong about the tail colour........It was the tail QUILLS that are are black :)

I got them from a great pet store here, but I'd say they're from a local breeder, they have capricornia rings - I think maybe someone had a cull, quite a few adults, a bit of everything. A lutino, sky blue spangle, a few olives, couple of greys etc... rather than all the other stores around here that seem to have 50 green budgies crammed into small cages :/

I know it's a great store because they have separate cages for their boy and girl rats. When I saw that I knew I was onto a good thing.

When I went in the other day, the birds were all chomping on fresh vegies <3

You are really lucky to have such a great local petstore. Here where I live there's only 2 petshops and they don't have much variety to choose from.. and there's not many breeders here either :)

Your birds are very nice :D

Yes Kaz I would agree with the black Quills

okay, I took the girls outside for some good light. I agree the blue is violet now, she definitely has a purply tinge, especially up around the shoulders. The camera just doesn't capture it properly though.

This is how quiet and docile they are and how close I can photograph them (in fact they nibbled the camera at one point).

She is an amazing, striking, canary yellow.

DEfinitly a violet of some sort. The second one now looks tcb to me also. The colour does not look anything like grey green.

Praps I should learn to trust my first thoughts. My train of thought was like this:

Yay, the blue girl is still there! Are there any others I might like too?

Wow, what is that yellow hen - I've never seen yellow and black like that.

...clearbody?

Nah.....

(oh who cares, she's gorgeous, someone will be able to tell me later)

:(

I figured it wasn't TCB because I live in Central QLD and we couldn't possibly have something cool here - ha :P Like I said, all the other stores have cages stuffed with normal greens. And I went with grey green because I've seen some pictures of a really yellowy colour being called grey green. I thought it was more probable to see a grey green than a TCB.

I don't mind looking silly and being corrected. I'm getting much better though, for a while I couldn't understand what Opaline was, for the life of me I could NOT see how it was different (you'll probably all think wow, how can you not see the difference).. hehe.

I've read everything I can find on violet and it still makes me

But I know it will all come in time. Like finally realising what opaline looks like! :P

Opaline was my most hated gene when I first started also. I couldnt understand how it worked out and could not tell the difference. Now I can and its pretty good.

Opaline is where the colour in betwen the wing markings of the bird is the same or similar colour to the rump/

Normal is different, for a standard green bird the colour in betwen markings is yellow, and for blue it is white (the colour of the face, usually)

Heres a normal green

Heres a opaline green

Their are most likeley exceptions to this and no doubt someone will come and correct me, but this is my understanding of it and its helped me learn.

I don't think many explanations of opaline markings are written for newbies. The photos I looked at - I just couldn't tell the difference. It made me feel really stupid - I'd be staring at them and reading the descriptions over and over and just didn't get it

Now I get it, yay.. but still make some mistakes, like with your blue boy - too busy looking at the wings and didn't notice his neck was normal, doh. I think I've got it now though. Promise.

okay so she is an

Opaline Texas Clearbody Greygreen

So that must be what your bird is.

Perhaps she flew from england to australia?

Nerwen said she wasn't opaline - but I thought she was because of her head/neck markings.

But history shows I am terrible with opaline to date

The site says that bird is an opaline.

Yep trust your self a bit more next time Emma. I agree with your 'yellow' girl as being a grey-green TBC. TBC is a par ino gene, in more simple terms (i hope) it only partly works. It removes the colour from the body as the ino gene would removed from all over the bird. which is why you have the yellow body.

20090328_hens_yellow_tail.jpg

this picture shows a faint grey-green tone in the feathers (where you would find the normal feather colour on a TBC if at all) and a black tail from the start (base) if it was green there would be an olive tint to the tail.

As stated before not Opaline in this case as the wing feathers are not green - they are not affected by the TBC gene. Yes this is one of the exceptions Pearce spoke of above

Thank you Kaz.. it's made me really happy to have people compliment the girls and the photos, I feel like I did good!

I'm a wannabe photographer, I love taking photos, especially nature photos and particularly macro shots.

Some bits and pieces:

I was really happy that the girls were quiet and let me get so close. I apologised to them later for hassling them so much

My camera is a Canon PowerShot A610 - nothing particularly fancy. I think I could do a lot with a decent SLR, but I can't justify buying one just now.

And thanks Nerwen, I will trust myself a bit more.. I guessed TCB and then grey green.. I'm pleased I actually got it right at first glance (even if I decided I must be wrong!).

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!! What a talent you have !!! When is your coffee table book of photos being published ?? I want one

Now I'm getting a big head

Have to give some credit to all the animals who put up with me poking a camera in their faces.

I think my composition is really good (if I say so myself) but sometimes the quality lets the picture down. I think I could do better with better equipment. But I do what I can with what I have.

Expect lots of photos from me :D

I agree with Kaz, they are FANTASTIC!!!! You have a real talent there! Looking forward to seeing the next lot :D
