How Long To Leave A Pair In The Breeding Box

Featured Replies

Posted

I have a pair of young birds - 18 months old who became a pair in the aviary. They were moved to the breeding box 5 weeks ago and the hen won't go into the nestbox. She hasn't even been interested. Should I remove them both to the aviary or try the male with another hen?

thanks

Shell :P

More info needed............

Age of birds

Condition of birds

Type and size if breeding cage

Location of breeding cage

Any other aviary noises there

Diet of birds

et etc

After 5 weeks and no action I would split the pair up. Rest them for a week or so and pair them with other birds. Could be many factors causing the pair to not breed.

Hi the birds are about 18 months old. Both in excellent condition. This would be their first clutch. The breeding cage is a standard size and is beside my other breeding cage with a pair (the hen has just laid the first egg today). They are fed quality seed, native grasses, sliverbeet, apple. They are in a protected location with direct view of the aviary some 10 mts away.

thanks Shell

All sounds good Shell :P.

Try this............remove the cock for a few days. Remove the nestbox. About 5 days later put the cock back but no nestbox. 5 days after put the nestbox back on.

See what happens.

Isnt it usually a case of two first timers = slow on the go?

Many breeders i know pair experienced males with first time females, and experienced females with first time males if they want things to move along a bit smoother. Of course nothing is ever for sure with budgies :D

I'd follow kaz's advice for now :D
