Posted March 25, 200916 yr Kiwi my 5 month old female laid an egg yesterday and I havent took it away because of her laying another but tonight she has to eggs and is sitting on them both. She is on her own her light is five or six hours a day then she is in a midiam darkish place but not covered. How do I stop this once and for all she's my little baby and is precious to me, please help
March 25, 200916 yr Keep taking the eggs away, she will get the idea soon enough and give up. Although breeding may not be involved, she is still too young to go through the stress of nesting. If you leave them and let the numbers add up she's gonna keep laying more. Keep taking them away. Make sure there are no "comfy" spots for her to lay (oversized feed dishes, ledges, shelves, etc...) if she is in a regular cage make sure the grate is in the bottom of it so she doesn't have a flat smooth area to lay either. I hope some of this info helps. I'm sure others will come along to help you out more. Good Luck!

She will lay another even after you take them, but keep taking them. If they are there she will nest. Soon enough she will stop. As for the grate, I don't used them either for my young birds, but in this case I think you should just for a short while. Without a grate on the bottom of the cage, the floor becomes a smooth nesting area and she is finding comfort enough to lay there. The grate, if from a standard bird cage, will not hurt her. She will be on the perches mostly and if she does lay an egg it will most likely break from the grate anywayt but if it doesn't and she attempts to nest it the grate will not be comfortable for her to do so. You can wait for the others and see what they say but I feel this is the best advise at this time for your situation.
March 26, 200916 yr I would not keep taking the eggs away as it makes her replace them. I would however make her cage the least likely place she would try and lay eggs and less comfortable places for egg laying....grid cage bottom, no paper etc. Or move her into another cage ( for distraction ) without her eggs and a cage with toys and grid bottom. March 26, 200916 yr At 5 months there is a good chance she might get egg bound... Can you replace the real eggs with fake eggs??
