Infertile Eggs

Featured Replies

I have a hen sitting on 5 eggs and i know the first 2 eggs are infertile and i am fairly certain the rest will be as well. They all have very big off centre air pockets in them. The reason i believe they are infertile is because she went to the nestbox too early, before she had bonded with the male. I am wondering what is the best thing to do, should i remove the eggs and nestbox and give her a few days bonding with the male and then reintroduce the nestbox. She has had a clutch before so i know she is fertile.

Personally I would wait a few days to make sure all eggs are definitly infertile. Then I would dispose of them and give the hen and cock 1 week without a nest box. Then once they are bonded re-add the nesting box and hopefully they will have mated by that time. Good luck.

I agree with Pearce's method :o But assuming the eggs are old enough to candle and you have done that and if then they are infertile, throw them away now. Candling from 5 days works for me :)

Thanks for the advice, She started laying on the 14th so i have candled the first 3 and they are infertile so i think the rest would be as well seeing she is more interested in the nestbox than the male.

Toss the eggs, remove the nestbox, remove the cock to a holding cage. Give her 5-7 days alone and then add the cock and no nestbox, give them a further 5 days then add the nestbox :)

I followed Kaz,s advice and my hen has her nestbox and male with her now. He has been feeding her and going in the nestbox with her so she has bonded with him. On sunday she laid her first egg and she has a eggbum tonight so hopefully another egg tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed that this time they are fertile.

Hope it works out this time. The method works for mine :)

PS do you think these budgie girls are starting a women's lib movement ?

I would suggest it is not the hen going into the box too early that has caused the infertilty, but the air bubbles in the egg. In my experinece these sorts of egg probelms are caused by an bacterial infection that the hen is carrying. Might pay to have it check out by getting a vet (or someone else competent with a microscope) to do a Gram stain. This wont tell you exactly which bacteria she has, but will narrow it down ehough to select a course of treatment.

I am going to use this method with all my budgies. I tried putting the hen into the cabinets with nestbox and then a couple of days later introduce the male but a couple of hens took to the nestboxs and were not interested in the males.

Hope it works out this time. The method works for mine :P

Your idea above is good , but remove the box when you put the cock bird in then replace the box in 5 days time.

Yesterday she laid another egg and i also found one on the floor of my avairy so i decided to put it in her nestbox instead of tossing it. It would have been only sitting on the floor of the aviary for a couple of hours before i saw it so would it still be okay if it is fertile?

The hen only laid 3 eggs and they were all infertile so i tossed them. It is starting to get cool at night now so i am going to wait till september when the weather warms up before i do any more breeding and hope i have better luck then.
