Budgies And Fish And Tortises

I am building an aviary and was wondering if I could build it over one of my ponds that is home to a long neck tortise and goldfish, will the bird poo effect the pond which is about 90 cm deep x 65 cm wide x 1.8m long, it recirculates into a larger pond that would not be assesible to the birds, there would be at least another 2/3 floor space for the aviary. and plenty of flight room, the pond is lush with some nice thick reeds, and a bowl like bird bath section flowing into pond. I would like to introduce finches to the equation as well. Can some body help me with some advice.

Many Thanks

Craig

I think the biggest concern (and I am no expert) is that your budgies can drown in the pond, many people use shallow bird bathes or nets to keep their budgies from drowning. That would be one of my concerns along with the fact that turtle can carry disease such as samonella which I assume can transfer to budgies. I would be more concerned about the budgies pecking at the tortiose poop then the other way around.

Not a good idea.

the amount of budgie poo in the pond would be bad for the tortoise.

The water would get contanimated and need to be changed on a regular basis.

Finches and budgies cannot be housed together anyway.

Think of a budgies natural environment - dry, arid, harsh landscape, limited water, and try to match this.

The finches might work better in the setup you are talking about.

I have to agree with Dave,

Water and budgies dont mix. We spend so much time making sure the aviary floors stay dry as water creates desease.

Also the finches cant go with the budgies. Budgies can take a finch leg off in one nip.

Budgie seed goes sour in water too. Your turtle would get sick from foul water pretty quick.

Are you able to build the aviary anywhere else?

At our last house I built what we called a "fernavarium". It was a shade cloth covered aviary with ferns and a small pond and we had finches and frogs in there. It was fantastic to go and sit in there. I had a sprinker system mounted on the ceiling and the finches hollow logs were above the spray from that. They all seemed to live happily together, but Budgies would have eaten their way though the shade cloth, I suspect.

Perhaps keep the budgies in their current cage and do it just with finches. I'd like to build a new bigger one here one day.:)

The bottom of a budgie's cage can get pretty rancid if not cleaned, so I can't imagine how that could be good for the pond.

But also, I don't think it would be good for the budgies to have a swampy like environment... even just the evaporating moisture around them- and perhaps mosquitoes and all kinds of other swampy things-- just doesn't sound like the right environment for them.

Hope you can find a great way to keep these animals separately :)

Thank you all for your advice and yes I have plenty of room to build elsewhere, and I will.
