I have noticed a few mice starting to venture into my yard. and I want to get rid of them before they pose a threat.

I don't like using poison outside because of wild animals, birds, my pet dog and the kids could all be effected by it if the mice spread it around or decide to die on the doorstep

 

Anyway... While concreting the bird room i remembered the remedy of using cement and sugar as a bait for mice.... well i have also heard that this is not very effective as the rodents may not eat enough of it to block up their system, and if they do eat enough wild animals who eat the dead mice could still be affected by the concrete.

 

so i had an idea.

 

Knowing that concrete is dehydrating i used 1 part concrete mix to 5 parts sugar. (this is much weaker than the kill recipe) and wont kill the mice, but will make them VERY VERY thirsty. Then i kindly put a half full bucket of water in their run path and put bricks up the outside of the bucket so they can climb up. They are so thirsty they jump in and drown -

 

Then you dig a little hole next to a bush, water the plant with the water out of the bucket, then cover the dead mouse in the hole with dirt. Water and fertiliser for the plant. no poisons... hmmmm seems pretty eco friendly to me

 

2 dead mice in 2 days!! I am happy with this method so far!!

When i had my rat problem last year I hired the exterminator with his high potency baits... dad washed his kayak out on the weekend and found it smelt funky... there was a dead rat in there rotting away!!! Haha MY BAD!

ewww!! that is the problem with bait, they die where ever they want. I hate it when they die in the walls of the house... it stinks out a room for ages!!

I have a stinky mouse dead in my bedroom wall at the moment..... I went to bed last night with oils burning. Don't know if the smell of the oils or the dead rat was worse, but I didn't sleep much. It also might have something to do with that our eaves near our bedroom aren't finished yet

 

BUT....... I have discovered a great way to kill mice without getting pellets brought into the aviary and our dog is safe too. You get a piece of poly pipe used for downpipes (about 3 ft long), drill two holes through the centre (in one side and out the other). Get a rat bait block and drill a hole through it. Then with some wire, secure the bait block inside the pipe, using the holes you have drilled. Your four legged friends can't get to the bait because its too far in the pipe and it encourages the mice to travel through the pipe (as they would!) and presto bait to eat. I have positioned at least 3 of these traps around the outside of the aviary.

 

We have killed at least 5 mice so far(that we have found) :celebrate:

My dogs are excellent mousers. So far, in the past 2 weeks, they have caught and killed 5 mice. They do not want to eat them. They will jsut kill them, and then leave them there for me to find. Gald none have been brought in the house so far. They knos the rules, no dog food is allowed in the house without permission.

Another mouse bites the dust

Its seems more effective in the warmer weather... and not very useful when it rains

you all crack me up me i just fill the holes with rat sack and fill them back up with dirt for now will try harder when in own place

going to put that mouse proof stuff under the floor of my aviry whats it called some kind of messy stuff so they can not get in through digging in

hope fully i wont get mice this year i did living at the back of a massive farm but when i move fingers crossed lots of ideas to use though thanks guys
