Posted March 22, 200916 yr Hey well I was able to find my current cage online and was wondering if you guys think its good enough to fit two budgies in it. Right now I have my one guy in it, which I think is okay, but am thinking of getting him a friend. Im still new at this cage thing and have been changing the perches in the cage to be a bit comfier. Ive changed two of the hooded cups to two regular open cups, have 2 wooden dowels, 2 rope perches, and a concrete perch (at a low spot). 3 toys and a swing. Right now the cage looks pretty cozy. I dont know if I should invest in a larger cage if I do get my guy a friend or if what I have is good enough. This is my cage description: And here is the link to see the picture. http://www.hagen.com/hagen/hagen/usa/birds...=08037200020101 - Horizontal Bars - for small birds such as budgies (parakeets), canaries and finches. - Complete with Stand - Finish: White Epoxy - Width: 17.5" - 44.5 cm - Depth: 15.1875" - 38.5 cm - Height: 44.75" - 113.6 cm (stand included) - Bottom: White - Tray: White - Top: Wire roof - Stand: White - Perch: 4 - Swing: 0 - Cup: 4 Outside Hooded Seed - White - Cage Attachment: N/A - Cage Clips: White - Spacing between wires: 0.421" (10.69 mm) - Wire Size: 0.064" (1.62 mm)
March 22, 200916 yr NO I dont think that is a good size cage for one budgie much less two. But that is just my opinion. Edited March 22, 200916 yr by KAZ
March 22, 200916 yr I agree with kaz sorry. the cage is quite small and not much room to fly from one side to the other. Perches front to back is best. I do not have pet birds in cages so I could be wrong, best to wait for a pet budgie owner to reply. Just seems quite small for 2 budgies.
March 22, 200916 yr IN my opinion minimum size for two budgies is 60cm wide ( 2 ft ) by 45cm deep ( a foot and a half ) by 45 cm high ( a foot and a half ) ....minimum. We have an article on cages under our cage section here on BBC. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=17858 Edited March 22, 200916 yr by KAZ
March 22, 200916 yr I remember reading somewhere that one bird needs a cage 20 inches by 20 inches by 20 inches minimum Is this true kaz?
March 22, 200916 yr I remember reading somewhere that one bird needs a cage 20 inches by 20 inches by 20 inches minimum Is this true kaz? Not being one to cage a single budgie in a cage I could not say Pearce, but the sizes you have given sound okay..... Bigger the better if you are going to cage a bird I always say.
March 22, 200916 yr I think that cage is fine pearce if your brirds are tame and you let them out at least 4 times a week for at least 45 mins each time. I try to let my indoor birds out once a day at least(sometimes they get let out twice and on weekends they have the cage door open all day). I keep 2 of my indoor birds in a cage about that size they love it and our cockatiell lives in a cage about the same size just taller and he doesn't mind. The only problem would be if you wanted to breed them in it then it wouldn't be big enough.
March 22, 200916 yr Wow, you guys are talking Taj Mahal's ! lol It really depends on how much "fly time " they get I suppose, and how good a life they have. It would be possible to have a miserable life in a massive cage...
March 22, 200916 yr Author Hi there thanks for all the responses This is my first time owning a budgie as a bird and Im trying really hard to make sure Im doing things okay. Well Im not interesting in breeding the budgies. I just want to give my guy a friend since I might be going to school in Sept and might not have as much time for one on ones. It seems some think that my cage isnt big enough even for one budgie. And here I thought it was pretty roomy for one guy And what to you mean perches from front to back? I think thats what I have now - but I am a dunce sometimes. Oh and thanks for the link on the other article about cages. My bird I guess is semi-tame? he was from a petstore in the beginning and was terrified of me. But now lets me pet his stomach, and sometimes steps up when he feels like it. I leave the cage door open 24/7 when Im at home. He is in my room. So technically he should have a lot of outside/flying time. But hes weird with coming out - maybe to climb on the lower half outside his cage or perch where his door is propped out while making excited noises. He wont go to the top of the cage on his own though. Hes still newish so maybe in time he will become more brave.
