Posted March 20, 200916 yr She is two years old this year in june and I was thinking of putting the egg in a nest box, as she has laid it on the floor and is sitting on it. She is in with her mate George after being seperated for a few months too recover from her last clutch. Is it to early for her to have another clutch? Her last clutch were laid in september and hatched in october last year and it was her first. I put this up just asking what to do, to be safe. Also are they to old George is two years old and she is nearly two?
March 20, 200916 yr That shouldn't be a problem I don't think... :ohmygod: As long as they are both fit and healthy.
March 20, 200916 yr Wont be a problem. They can do 2 clutches per year I believe. No 2 years is not to old, I stop breeding hens at 3-4 or when they show signs of retiring and the cocks can go up to 5-6 years. My friend has a 11 year old male who is still fertile, he doesnt let him raise the chicks though.
March 20, 200916 yr Dont put the egg in the nestbox as she will throw it out when she "cleans out" the nestbox getting it ready to her satisfaction. Put the egg in a safe place for now, somewhere else ( not in the cage ) add the nestbox and only once she has laid the next egg do you add the first egg she laid...budgie psychology involved here :ohmygod: Edited March 20, 200916 yr by KAZ
March 20, 200916 yr Author okay so she is fine to raise another clutch? When should I add the box? I wanted to move them into a different room a quiter less akward room is that safe?
March 20, 200916 yr okay so she is fine to raise another clutch? When should I add the box? I wanted to move them into a different room a quiter less akward room is that safe? Nestbox NOW so she has time to work it out before the next egg........make sure the bottom of the cage look less appealing...no newspaper. Its a chance you take moving the cage at this point...........quiet...to budgies....means danger....so busy and noisy sometimes is okay :ohmygod: She is fine to raise this clutch and is only considered too old at around age 4
March 20, 200916 yr Personally I hate moving breeding cages. this has never happened to me but I've been told that the birds will get stressed in new environments and neglect eggs or chicks. Going from a very quiet to a very noisy place would have that effect. It's never happened to me because I've never changed breeding rooms. Its a risk, its up to you if you take it or not.
March 20, 200916 yr Author she would be being moved from a very noisey room to a quiet room is that safe?
March 20, 200916 yr Author It's a risk moving her. She may stop laying, its up to you. she's only laid one egg on the floor of her cage I just need to move her because where she is, is akward for a breeding box to be put on I'de disturb her all the time I go to check eggs/chick
March 21, 200916 yr If you want to move the cage, so it now. If it is a quiet room, consider adding some music during the day. Budgies liek ti noisy, when they are quiet, it means dange,r so she will not want to lay then. Follow Kaz's advice with the egg. it can go a few days without her sitting on it.
March 21, 200916 yr Author I moved her yesterday and added the box that night. She's been sitting in it and her butt looks big but I havent seen any mating but I dont think she's incredibly cofortable with the box yet
