You want to know their genders?

Jackson is a boy and I don't know about Jasmine, he/she is a Recessive Pied and I don't know how to tell the sex of them..probably a girl though?

And personally I think you should treat both of them for scaly face mites, they look like both of them have it starting.

jackson is definatly a boy

not sure about jasmine

wait till the experts get on her case!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jackson is most defineitely a boy and Jasmine may well be a boy too. How old is Jasmine ?

Both birds have scalyface and need to be treated. Best and easiest method is with spot on ivermectin available from the vet.

hi, thanks all for your answers  What does "Recessive Pied" mean? I am very new to keeping birds and do not know anything..:D Also, how do they get scaley face - is it something I do wrong or can do better and how much would the treatment cost?

Thanks again :)

Recessive pied refers to the bird being a pied coloured or mutation bird and recessive refers to the fact that the kind of pied here is a recessive gene. Also called Danish pied.

Re the scalyface...its nothing you have done :) Just pops up here and there in birds where they may have once had contact and if they are feeling a little low the scaly face kicks in....kind of like have a wart virus in your blood and occasionally the warts pop up :D

Phone your local vets and ask for prices for ivermectin. Sometimes it is sold over the counter...sometimes you need to pay for a vet visit. You can apply oil to the feet and beak of your birds are easily handled....apply daily over a week or two.

It's a mutation, where, unlike Jackson who is not a Recessive Pied, Jasmine will not get a blue cere. (ie, the part above the beak) and it will stay pink if Jasmine is a boy, or go brown if she is a girl. And she'll never get iris rings either..Jackson would have iris rings (white rings in each eye) but Jasmine never will.

Above is a link to website that explains all the mutations, with pictures, if you want to read it.

How old is Jasmine?

I bought a treatment from the petshop for my birds (who recently got mites) and it is quite cheap and working well. About $10 maximum I would say.

Edit: Didn't see Kaz's post. Listen to her lol.

Kaz, Thanks for your response. I am happy that Jackson is officially a boy (mostly because it would be hard to understand for my son if I tell him Jackson is actually Jacksolina :) Now I also understand recessive pied - thanks so much. We had another budgie before Jasmine (she was called Jamie but she flew away after a very naughty Cockatoo opened their cage one day in search of their food! Jackson wanted to stay with us and stayed hidden under the BBQ but Jamie took flight. My daughter was heartbroken so we bought Jasmine :) They were both bought from a local petshop and I have an idea that Jasmine might already have had the mites and now it just became worse. She is otherwise in very good health and (..I hope it is a she:) they get along very well. They groom each other and are very loving. What behaviour would be typical from a male and female bird? Jackson is much more laid back but Jasmine is a real woman with PMS sometimes (hie hie ..) She would chase Jackson away from the mirror or would not allow him near the food and just talk and talk and then start shouting at him.. I will phone the vet tomorrow to get the ivermectin - but I do not have to treat the cage too am I right? Thanks again for all the advise and I love reading through the forum!!Estelle

Hi, thanks for the reply and also the link re mutations etc. read it and found it very usefull! Must admit that I have always loved birds but never owned one before but the more I read the more I become hooked!! I really hope that Jasmine is a girl :) I am not sure how old she is - was hoping somebody could help with that? Bought her as a baby from a Petshop about 5 months ago though. :ohmygod:

so 'she' could be around 8 months old then and may start proving her gender now. the bossiness you spoke of in the behaviour sounds like a hen. I would have been expecting a change in cere colour from about 4 months of age onwards (usally from a pet store the birds are from 3 months or older) some can take a while to change.. has she had a BIG moult yet? - lots of feathers lost and the new one looking much stronger in colour.

thinking of the age of about 8 months i think she could be a he

If jasmine is over 5 months old then it is a cock. Jackson is a cock also.

I don't have much experience with pieds, but I do suspect Jasmine is a boy. And the aggressive behaviour he/she is displaying is probably because he/she is attached to the mirror. Mirrors can make even the sweetest bird aggressive sometimes- they are quite unpredictable with them.

Your birds are both males. As you have been reading about recessive pieds you will understand why Jasmine's cere is pink and not blue like most other male budgies
