Hen Egg Laying Problem Again

Featured Replies

Posted

I've seperated her from all her siblings weeks ago probly months ago because I blamed her brother for her laying an egg but later found her sister mating!

I was quite shocked, so I immediately seperated all of the siblings. She layed about three eggs while she was together with her siblings. then when I seperated them she stopped then I thought phew this is the end of that problem. And since then she's layed about 5 more but after she lays them I throw them away so am I causing it? if not what is?

She seems pretty healthy other than the egg laying. The eggs she lays are strong shelled. No blood on them.

You can tell she's young she still has the bars and no iris's.

You throwing them away is making her replace them.

I thought so, but what else can I do?

Is she just dropping them from the perch or has she made a nest? If she is just dropping them from the perch removing them won't mattter. If she is nesting in the corner of the cage or the food dish or something similar you should re-arrange the cage and remove anything she is using. You could add a wire grill to the floor if necessary

Can she see anything from her cage that could be stimulating her, like nests or other birds nesting or even ornaments that look like nests

I agree that she is still laying because she must think there is somewhere to nest. If she is dropping them off the perch then she may have a health issue which will make her become a chronic egg layer.

Make sure she is getting the very best diet until this egg laying is fixed as its sapping essential nutrients from her growing body.

I agree with Neville. Can we see a picture of her cage and set up ?

I think it's because she can see nesting boxs and somtimes she rips paper and perches up an sit in the corner.

I never realised just seeing boxs could trigger it, I'm giving her egg food to get her streght up and she has idosodine blocks and 2 whole cuttle fish.

should I give her any thing else?

I'll get pictures of her cage later, She can also see a breeding pair they are her parents who have resently been put back in together, if that's doing anything

This is the cage she can see which has two of her sisters in it the nest box on the side is blocked and the two inside don't know it's there.

You have visible nestbox holes and platforms to them......this alone may be enough for her to think she can use a nestbox. Got another kind of cage she can go in ?

Also remove anything she sees as nesting materials and if that means the newspaper then remove that too. Make sure any food dishes are the small spout dispenser type and not a "nest looking" dish type :)

I agree with Kaz, Try her in a wire cage with a wire grill in the bottom and i think that should be sufficient to stop her egg laying.

In that large cage there's no visable holes those are shelves that you see I put vegges on them. And I don't like the grill cages i get worried that they're going to get hurt on them, and I took the newspaper out but the tray gets really dirty because she poops and throws her water onto the floor and I can't give her the tube drinkers she does'nt know how to use them.

and she is not in the large cage she's in a smaller cage.
