Posted March 16, 200916 yr Hi, I am looking at buying a hand raised baby male budgie as a pet for inside the house. My Dad (who bred budgies many eons ago) told me it was best to buy a budgie that is born during the winter months, but couldn't tell me why!? (I live in North Brisbane) Has anyone else heard of this?? What is the best age to buy a young budgie to have as a pet? Many thanks. Curious
March 16, 200916 yr Sounds like an old wives tale to me, especially given few breeders breed over winter
March 16, 200916 yr I agree with MB never heard of such a thing. We have an article in our FAQ called "How to Evalulate a Breeder" and "How to Evaluate a Pet Store" excellent reads and that should help point you in the right direction on purchasing your new feathered friend.
March 16, 200916 yr Well I can't tell you why but if your looking for a young bird. 8 weeks to 3 months is a good age. I'm in North brisbane as well. Warner.
March 16, 200916 yr I agree that the month of the baby hatching doesn't affect the bird. Aim for a strong and solid baby from a breeder. Never buy the little scrawny one because its cute as they are the ones that are likely to get issues.
March 17, 200916 yr I have heard this tale before, the reason that the person told me this was that breeders have fewer clutches in winter therefore the baby will be handled more. That may be the case for small time breeders like myself but larger breeders I don't think will handle the birds any more or less.
