My Breeding Journal

hi everyone this is my first post here( it may be a little late but ive been reading the forums for a while and felt it was time to make myself known)

i got my avairy on chrismas day as a present and got my budgies on boxing day and the day after i got a couple of breeding boxes and put them in ( i didnt know that they werent supposed to breed in summer) less then a week later my budgies started laying eggs

this is my first pair

top box

and this is my second pair

bottom box

the second pair layed an egg in my top box ( i have a box on the floor and one on a plank about half way up the cage (i didnt know that they would fight over the top one)) after a day it got pecked at by the first pairs mum i think and then she started to lay in the top box and the other one started laying in the bottom box. the top one laid 8 eggs and the bottom one layed 5 not including the one that got crack/pecked. they were both good mums and dutifully sat on the eggs baing fed my their mates.

then one day one of the top eggs hatched i was so happy because when i went out it had already been fed (i go out at about 7:30 each morning( and once or twice in the afternoon)). then the next day another one hatches and the next another one hatches. nothing goin on in the bottom box. next day no one hatchs(i hadnt candled the eggs) so i thought that the others were infertile. still nothing happening in the bottom box. the next day another baby hatches in the top box. by this time had been feveratly searching for budgie information and found out that the parents will kill them selfs trying to feed the babys and was worried that they would kill themselfs so i was hopeing that the rest were infertile. two days latter another one hatches and i feel i must do something about it but i dont know what. still nothing happening in the bottom breeding box. another 2 days pass and another one hatches so i final decide to do something about it. i had read on the internet that you can swap eggs and even babys to different mums and htere was a fairly high sucess rate. so i moved the remaining two eggs to the bottum mum and took two of her eggs because i didnt want her thinking were did these two eggs come from and kick them out. 3 days later another baby hatches in the bottum nest this time and i assume that its from the top mum nut i cant be sure till it feathers up abit. the other egg from the top mum didnt hatch. non of the bottom mums did  i hope she or her mate isnt infertile.

any way heres a photo of all the top babys about two week befor they start coming out of the nest

as you can see there is a sugnificent difference between the babys colour and dads (all babys colours are the same)

i now have a few questions about my budgies

what shade of blue is dad and the babys?

is the green baby a yf2?

are the other two in the nest yf2s?

the top mum is goin into the box joining the one the top babys are in. is she defenantly goin to lay in there?

i have seen the bottom pair mating again does that mean that she will lay more eggs?

opps nearly forgot about the bottom baby budgie. it is a blue and as far as i can tell the same colour blue as the other baby budgies

i think that every thing but im sure ill come back on in a few hours and ask some more questions

Its hard to tell from the pictures, but it appears the parents may have scaley face. Could you provide better pictures of the parents?

You may have read about this already in the forums, but colony breeding (putting nest boxes all over your aviary and letting your birds breed as they wish) is a risky and problem filled way to go. You already noticed that birds fight over the 'best' box, and if anyone was to advice you on colony breeding, they would say place all the boxes at the same height and ensure they all look identical to minimise fighting. Also, having two boxes for every female allows them to feel they dont need to fight.

Colony breeding can be done successfully, but anyone who goes on to try cabinet breeding will tell you they'll NEVER go back to colony breeding. Hopefully next time you want to breed you will have breeding cages and boxes prepared and will be able to implement a nutritional program to make sure your birds are in tip top breeding shape and stay there!

It was a good idea to swap out the fertile eggs/chicks and use the other hen as a feeder so that neither couple were too stressed. Hope to see how you progress as you learn more

no there not being treated i didnt realise they were scaley as thats how i got them and thats how ive seen them around the place how do i treat them?

i will probably try cabinet breeding next year as i doubt i will be breeding them again this year

can any body answer my questions?

You could post some better pictures of the parents first, that would help us to better see if they have scaley mites or not.

Alternatively, take them to the vet to get checked for scaley mites. If the vet says they have mites, he/she will provide information and treatment for you.

I agree about the scaly face...it was my first thought. Scaly face is treated best with aviary birds by using spot on ivermectin from the vet. With pet type budgies who are easily caught each day rubbing oil on their beak and feet will work after a few applications. Ivermectin is great as mostly requires a once only treatment.

what type of oil?

i will try to get better photos of them for tomorow

what will happen if it goes untreated?

what will happen if it goes untreated?

It gets worse then....like this raeudemilben03.jpg

Ouch.... every time is see these type of pictures I cringe. A very curable disease just left to ravage these poor birds.

I don't see how someone could let their bird get so bad!! If you couldn't/wouldn't treat it, the least you could do it euthanize it before it got so awful! Do they somehow not notice this sooner? Or maybe they're sickos and did it on purpose. :o

hi there sorry i dont ahve picture of the parents but it been hectic lately ill get them and post them soon

my last baby budgie is out of the nest and theres another egg in there i think hes been peck out by the mum because his feathers around and below his crop are sticking together and hes hiding in the corner of the cage

if he has been pecked out will mum still feed him? or will i have to take him? also do i smash the egg or just take out the box (i have another mum who has the foster kid and if i take the top box out will they fight/kill the baby?)

okay heres a picture of two of the parents

and here are some pics of the baby budgie

2789388930104730780S425x425Q85.jpg

what has happened to him? do i need to separate him from the rest? do i need to hand feed him?

from what i can see the stuff on him is seed and some other gunk could it be possible that his crop is broken?

Check this baby urgently...if the crop has been pierced she needs urgent vet care ....it sounds like the crop is damaged....infection will set in big time now....urgent you remove the chick and get it to a vet.

The do a thorough check of the aviary for wire that sticks out...a baby fledging a nestbox who cannot fly all that well will fly into objects like wire.....

In this photo............2985786150104730780S425x425Q85.jpg check the wire sticking under the perch.
