Posted March 11, 200916 yr Hey everyone. I have a little 8-month-old budgie called Beanie. He was fine when we bought him from the pet shop, but a few weeks after we got him home - chaos hit! He is the most destructive budgie i have ever owned. He tips his water out, pulls off his feed bowl, tears up his millet, destroys his toys, eats through the perches, etc. What can i do? He isn't trained yet, either, so that probably doesn't help. I'm having to buy new perches, toys and bowls for him so often, and he just destroys everything! And he can't be bored - he has so many toys! Please help! _peep_
March 11, 200916 yr Perhaps he is very smart and needs additional stimulation plus one on one time. Is he tame? [preens while sitting on your shoulder] Look for some every day items to use as toys which cost nothing, i have read posts which highly recommend cardboard rolls from toilet paper, stuffed with treats, post was captive foraging i think. My bloke doesn't like grapes that much but adores chewing the bunch when the grapes have been removed...
March 11, 200916 yr Don't buy perches for him, they aren't good for his feet anyway, use natural branches from gum trees Also you can give gumnuts and leaves, bottlebrush branches, etc as toys too, they'll love chewing them up and cost nothing.
March 11, 200916 yr In the Nutrition section you will see 2 articles PINNED called Captive Foraging I believe your bird would benefit from this greatly.
March 12, 200916 yr Author I'm happy to update the progress on Beanies destructve behaviour. He is now doing very well, i've put all sorts of natural things in his cage, which he happily tries to climb on and then munch on for a while. :rip: He has stopped tipping out his water and food, which is a great start, as that was the main problem i wanted to solve :sadsorry: Edited March 12, 200916 yr by _peep_
