Hen Attacking Male

Featured Replies

Last week i put my hens into the breeding cabinets and this morning i introduce the males but one hen is getting cranky with the male and attacking him if he goes near her. Should i remove him and try another male, she is a very cranky hen normally. Or do i give them a few hours to get used to each other. The male came out of a different aviary to the one she was in.

Some hens are overly cranky. It is possibly a sign that she is not interested in breeding at the moment. How is her cere colour? Have you seen her interested in any males at all in the aviary? Perhaps select her another male, and if she doesn't warm to him, try her some other time.

Her cere is dark brown but it always that colour, i have a couple of hens who i have noticed that they are always in breeding condition. she had a male partner in the aviary who was preening her and feeding her and she was attacking any other hens that came near him. He is too young yet to breed with so i cannot put him into the cabinet with her.

We have made some progress this afternoon she is allowing the male now to sit on the same perch as her.

Monitor closely. If she injures him, have your white pepper ready!

I am going to be watching her closely, she was handraised by me and even though she lives in the aviary is still very friendly. It will be interesting to see if she will be a good breeder even though she was handraised. i have cornflour in my medicine box in my breeding room ready for any injuries.

i am hoping i get some nice bubs from her, she is a violet skyblue spangle and i have paired her with a cobalt normal.

I remember her. She is the one that comes up to the wire when you are there right?

I hoep you get some lovely babies from her Deb.

Yes Dave, she is the one who came and chatted to you when you visited. She is so funny in the cabinet, when i go into the breeding room she will be in the nest box but as soon as she hears me talking she comes out of the box and comes to the front of the cage with her beak out of the wire wanting a kiss.

i know this sounds kind of harsh, but when she is in there, perhaps you should keep your distance for a few days. Seems her love is torn, between her new beau, whom she can have a family with, and the love of her life.....YOU - :)

You are probably right Dave, i will try to stick with the morning and afternoon checks and stay away from the breeding room for the rest of the day.
