Going To A Budgerigar Auction Tomorrow

Featured Replies

Off to a budgerigar Auction tomorrow in Geelong there are some of Victoria's best breeders birds there.

I have never been to one before so am really excited about it but i have to get up at 4am and we are heading off at 5am. B)

Greg has gave me some money to spend so I hope I see something I like that fits my budget.

It's funny I have the catalogue here and I have marked so many to look at that I really need to be more serious. :laughter:

Good luck.

I would look at your birds before going and seriously be criticaly of them. Write down features that you need in them and then try to find birds with those features in the auction....

There is nothing worst than to pay for a bird and findout that you have better ones at home.

Thanks Daz, I have done that. Greg warned me don't come home with anything inferior to what I have :P

I always get carried away at auctions .... BUT I do know what you're supposed to do, even if I don't always manage to do it myself! :P

1. Pick you favourites from the catalogue

2. Call the breeders if you can and find out their history and background

3. Walk around slowly and critically assess your choices

4. Walk around again and look at all the birds, maybe there's something there you hadn't considered

5. List your favourites from 1 (most wanted) to ...... x

6. Decide how much you're prepared to pay BEFORE the auction begins

7. STICK to your decision!

Have a good time! :D

Sometimes a breeder slips a youngster in that isnt developed yet...doesnt look quite up to par with the older birds on offer and by comparing them the youngster is overlooked. If there are any young ones, bred by breeders you like, try and analyse the youngster and see its potential. I have come home with a couple of absolute bargains that way...knew its breeding and background, saw its potential, and ignored its current lack of growth. 12 week old chick bought at auction for $25 because noone bid against me looks great now :P

I was considering going to that auction but my boss had other ideas, now I have to work.. Grrr.

If I cant get to an auction, I select off the catalogue, hand money to a trusted friend who can choose better budgies than I can and give them my money and a budget. :P

okay Renee and Kaz got my plan lets see how I stick to it :P But I know one thing I will have fun :D

I do have a habit of going crazy at any auction so I really need to be careful.

Kaz I don't think there is any really young birds there.

Sorry you can't go Jimmy could of put a face to your name maybe next time. :D

Thanks Pearce, I have been getting a lecture on what to do all day off Greg god I wish he was coming because I just know I will bring home someting unsuitable :bluebudgie:

But I am going to enjoy myself :D

Oh i hope you have a blast and bring home some birds that you are really satisfied with :bluebudgie:

Bummer Mr Rudd's money hasn't arrived yet or I might have boosted the pockets of some breeders with it :bluebudgie: Oh well, I think my club has an auction comingup soon with some good national breeders putting birds in.

Splat - theres no point going there and hoping to get a bird better than what you have at home. Look for features that you need, if you are trying to buy a complete bird it's a wasted exercise. You would be better off stopping somewhere and spending half your money on a nice lunch, that way you have only wasted half your money !!!!

I will be intersted as to what Splat, thinks of our auction,Members of the GEELONG Club birds in the auction.have to go through a preselection,to get in the auction. The other birds are from invited breeders,& if they are not up to scratch, they wont make the bench & they will not be invited back. The bird can only be 07 & 08 rings. No old birds

or unbroken caps.

PS Heathrow, you may be surprised of the quality of the birds on offer. We only invite the top breeders.

Macka the point i was making to Splat, is if she is going to an auction to buy better birds than what she has at home she'll be disappointed. We all look at the catalogue and think they are better, but rarely are better as a complete bird. That's why i suggested to look at the features and buy accordingly.

Thats what I said Heathrow...

But the problem occurs when you start looking at the birds. It takes a good eye and strong will to buy what you need instead of what you want. Got to confess that I have bought many times what I want and not what I need only to find better in my flight.. :D

Its so easy to look at a catalogue or a bird for auction, and lose sight of what its worth. I've done the same Daz, bought birds at auction only to have better ones at home. My preferred method of bringing stock is to develop relationships with other breeders with similar bloodlines and SWAP.

I have a close relationship with a breeder who we bought our original stock from the same source and have swapped birds every year since. I can go into his flight and say i want to use his best cock for a season over a good hen. He does likewise. Some much better than forking out money!!!!

It's good that you have that type of relationship. It is built on trust.

heathrow, are you a member of a club. You have n/a for club.Do you show,Seeing as you don't go to the auction

how do you know, the standard of the bird,in the auction.

I am back had a great day but very very long day and was so tied by the yime we got home, we left here at 5.30 am and arrived home at 6.30pm.

It was an experienced, birds went mainly between $400 and $900 the occasional cheap one. Everything I picked out went over $500.

I did get 4 birds, 2 Lt green cocks, 1 sky blue cock and 1 grey dom pied cock, notice they are all boys.

But I do have heaps of hens here and not many cocks.

One of the lt green cocks is a Ross Loat bird with 50% Sheppard/Flanagan nice bird nut I gave it to my friend who took me down because I think he was yellow face because he had a really dark mask which is good but I don't want yellow face popping up everywhere when not expected. Plus I asked the breeder about mixing him with what I have here and he said no he wouldn't mix.

Anyway the other Lt green cock is a Alan Rowe bird and that is what I went down to get.

Pics later.

Gee Heath that would be very exspensive lunch considering what they fetched.

I was after features but most of what I picked out went for hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

But the way I see it been my first time at a auction I say live and learn.

But the best thing was when I got home Greg thought the birds I got were quite good, so I was happy with that.

Macka I thought it was a great day and the auction was put on very well and the quality of the birds were really good only wish I had $900, to waste on a lobely big framed hen I had my eye on. Anyway she went for something like that price,

Here are the birds

Lt Green Alan Rowe bird wouldn't pearch enough for the picture but he is really much nicer than the picture and has heaps more head than he looks in the picture

Splat I would SWOT them now.

S - Strengths

W - Weakness

O - Opertunities

T - Threats

Strengths and Weakness's are obvious but Opertunities are things such as age, breeding condition, relationships to your existing birds. etc.

Threats come with time. eg, Non breeder, Scalper, etc.

You should also do this with your existing birds.

Then cross your strengths against your weakness's. Eg if you have a cock that you have bought with a good brow and a hen in your flight with a good mask then that is a good start.

Just make sure you don't cross two weaknesses togeather.

Two strengths togeather is very good. It will help inforce that strength in the birds.
