Posted March 7, 200916 yr Hi I've been viewing a few topics on the forum and I've noticed that many people use sand on their aviary floor. I am thinking of doing this also. I have a few questions. 1. Which is better? Sand or cement? Please give reasoning behind your answer. 2. How often do you need to replace the sand? 3. How do you clean it? 4. How deep should the sand be in the aviary? An inch? 2 inches? 3 Inches? 5. Which type of sands are safe? Sand pit sand or gritty sand? Thanks for your time, all opinions welcome

Thanks for your time, all opinions welcome I prefer the sand because my hubby doesn't have to scrub the floor every week, in fact we rake and sweep once a month now. The sand is also a natural form of grit. I used white washed sand, the type used for kiddie's sand pits. Every 3-4 months we top up. We laid it 4-5cm thick. I also put down 1 inch of garden lime first onto the pavers, though that's optional.
March 7, 200916 yr sand, shell grit or lime over concrete is the best. Bare concrete can become impregnated with disease, so its best to sprinkle sand under the perches as a bare minimum. Edited March 7, 200916 yr by **Liv**
March 7, 200916 yr Author Thank you Liv. Does anyone happen to know the going price for a cubic meter of sand pit sand?
March 7, 200916 yr Thank you Liv. Does anyone happen to know the going price for a cubic meter of sand pit sand? I think I paid about $40 for a trailer load, can't be more specific I'm afraid.
March 7, 200916 yr i think 20kg bags are about $8 from bunnings?? I suppose it depends on the size of you aviary. Our largest is very big so a delivered trailer was a bonus, we also did 2 other aviaries at the same time. For a smaller patio styled aviary getting a bag from Bunnings is the go.
March 7, 200916 yr i think 20kg bags are about $8 from bunnings?? Soils suppliers are cheaper...our sand was $5.50 a bag from a soil place.
March 7, 200916 yr Author The aviary I want to lay sand is about 3 meters by 3 meters. Would a bag do this area?
March 7, 200916 yr no, i think you will need about 1/2 a trailer to cover that size. It also depends how deep yoou want it Edited March 7, 200916 yr by **Liv**
March 7, 200916 yr What is the idea with the lime? And for a small one budgie cage, is newspaper the go?
