Posted March 3, 200916 yr This is my new budgie, no name yet.. And he is a boy.. right? Also: what would be his description and approximate age? Ring: Purple - 4301 ( I'm clueless about the rings)
March 3, 200916 yr Hard to tell from these pics, but i am guessing early that, yes, he is a boy, and I say he might be a yellow face type 2 recessive pied. That is because the yellow looks a litte washed out. Can you get a picture a bit further back from him so we can see his whole body clearly?
March 3, 200916 yr Looks like a boy to me He looks like a double factor pied, possibly a recessive pied. Need more photos of his wings and body to tell for sure. Edited March 3, 200916 yr by **Liv**

March 4, 200916 yr Author Thank you And I just decided on his name last night. Actually my little sister thought of it so we named him Louie.

March 6, 200916 yr Ring: Purple - 4301 ( I'm clueless about the rings) USA legband colours are ABS ID Band Colors: GOLD - '96 SILVER - '97 GREEN - '98 ORANGE - '99 LIGHT BLUE - 2000 BLACK - 2001 GOLD - 2002 SILVER - 2003 DARK BLUE - 2004 WHITE - 2005 YELLOW - 2006 BLACK - 2007 GOLD - 2008 SILVER - 2009 So as there is no purple legband.......is it dark blue ? or is it a closed leg band or a split legband ?

Cory - You are in the US and he color chart that KAZ has provided will NOT be the same for us over here in US as it is in Australia. I have one Normal Blue Hen that has a purple leg band on her leg reading TF 07 and she is an 2007 bird. In the second set of pictures you posted the band looks to be the same purple color as my hen's. I can't say for sure because I am in PA and we are not in the same state, but I do know that 08' leg bands in US, PA are mostly black and a few dark blue. Is there any other numbers or letters on the band?? Edited March 6, 200916 yr by chrissy0705

Cory's profile say USA so I wasnt about to give her Australian leg ring colours. If the legring is actually purple and not dark blue....purple isnt on the list so it wont be a band from the ABS. March 6, 200916 yr Definatly a young cock i'd say, but i'd disagree, it definatly is a yf recessive, it's yellow is too light to be a green bird.

My only point was that the colors on this chart don't seem to match even the US birds. I was stating that I have birds that have black bands in 08', blue bands in 08', blue bands in 07', purple bands in 07'... and as pointed out these may not be from the ABS... another point I'm making is that the US doesn't seem to follow the banding systems as faithfully as Australia.... I have yet to own one single bird that has fallen into this US banding color. So unless the band it's self has the 07,08,09 year on it the color alone doesn't seem to be of much help here in the US.

I live in Colorado..if that helps a bit..three of my birds including Louie have the iris bands which looks to me more like purple and they are split legbands and i'm pretty sure they're not dark blue or any shade of blue either. Here are the colors and numbers for all 4 of my birds: Louie: Iris/Purple - 4301 Snowflake: Iris/Purple - 6146 Fiona: Iris/Purple - 6995 Sky: Silver - 9638 I have no idea what those numbers mean.. Definatly a young cock i'd say, but i'd disagree, it definatly is a yf recessive, it's yellow is too light to be a green bird. This is exactly how his color looks like.. the other pictures have bad lighting and the yellow looks washed out but this picture shows his true colors. ( Hope that helps with his description ) Edited March 6, 200916 yr by Cory
March 6, 200916 yr Split rings are not official club rings so you won't be able to tell the year by the colour. The numbers will be just those used by the breeder to indentify the birds. You bird is a type 2 yellow face blue recessive pied male Edited March 6, 200916 yr by Neville

The band chart I posted is correct for any birds rung by the ABS standards. Any other colour rings on birds will be breeder rings not asssociated with the ABS...like split rings and a breeders coloured family rings. If anyone has rings coloured other than the ABS rings then they are just rung by their breeders to identify family lines. Split rings can go on a bird at any time in its life.
March 7, 200916 yr This bird wouldn't be a YF at all, they patch of green on the belly proves that, as this bird is young (bars to the cere) that patch would be blue on YF at that age. The yellow bleed always starts after the first moult (6 months or so)

The yellow bleed always starts after the first moult (6 months or so) I agree with Nerwen on this one. This appears to be a Recessibve Pied Light Green Cock... not a blue series bird at all let alone yellowface. And as for the leg band to make it simple US or AUstralian... the band colors you have do not match the ABS charts, simply meaning that your bird is most likely from a private breeder who bands their birds with their own color and number system. But if you got it from a pet store, here in the US, you can almost count on the bird being at or about 2 months old when in the store. So I'd say this bird is a young male about 3-6 months old at the most. Hope this helps.
