Male Budgies Fighting

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi all, I have 3 male budgies and 1 female. Just recently 2 of my male budgies have started fighting and I think they are fighting over the female. As soon as I removed the female and put her into a separate cage the males stopped fighting and seem quite happy with each other again. There has been bloodshed with the fighting so I am quite concerned about this.

Does anyone know if there is a longterm solution to this problem? I would prefer not to have to separate my budgies if there is something else I can do.

You will find your hen is in breeding condition and the males know this and are fighting over her.

You can keep her separate for a while and put her back when the males calm down. Or you can buy 2 more hens to even up the numbers (new birds need 30 days quarantine first though)

Its up to you what you need to do as it depends on your setup and how many birds you can have.

You don't have any nest boxes do you, or any where she may see as a good place to lay eggs??? I know this causes fights with females... so maybe males too?

No, don't have any breeding boxes or anywhere that I think she may want to lay eggs. My oldest male is 3, my female is 2 and then the younger male involved in the fighting is about 1 so I think the problem may be that he has reached breeding age, would that be right?

How many times a year do hens go into breeding condition and how long would I have to separate her for?

Hens breeding condition cycle is different for each bird. some cycle every 6 weeks or so, and others may only do it once or twice a year.

What type of setup have you got?? inside pets or aviary?

They are inside birds, but do have lots and lots of time out the cage, unfortunately because they are inside birds I don't have anymore room to add any more females, we would all end up deaf if I did

You say you have three males, how about making two cages of two so that no one is alone, should solve the fighting.

Good plan

Well after some deliberation I am thinking that it will be best for my situation if I find her a new home. She is a beautiful girl and this is a very hard decision for me. She is not overly tame so I would like her to go to someone who has a very big aviary and would be able to keep her happy and well looked after for the rest of her life. She is a little bit gumpy at times and has chewed a few toes but I understand this is quite normal for females.

If anyone in Perth is able to give her this type of home in their aviary can you please let me know.

Thanks heaps.

what was wrong with the two cage idea seemed a very good silution to me

you could have one in the lounge and one in the familey room bed room kitchen (dinning room )

but if you want to give her up good luck finding a nice home

I should be able to give her a new home. I am in the middle of renovating an avairy and should be finished this weekend.

What type is she?

Can you please post or pm me a picture of her.

Cheers,

Glen

Well the 2 cage idea would be a solution, but we have a small open plan home so the dinning room, kitchen and lounge are in one L shape and putting one cage in a bedroom would be mean in my mind, plus my boyfriend thinks the budgies own half the house as it is so this is more a solution to keep everyone happy in the house if you know what I mean. I did promise him that if we had anymore problems with her I would find her a nice new home, I was just hoping it wouldn't come down to that.

This is the only photo I have on my work computer of her, it was taken Dec 07 but you will get an idea of what she looks like. She is the blue one (sorry, not good with types). Her name is Kiwi.

She is a pretty hen too.

Good luck finding her a good home.

If she has lived inside for a long time, it may be a shock to her system to suddenly go outside in a large aviary. I would make the process gradual so she gets used to the outside weather.

Inside birds don't tend to have as much down feather as the ones that are kept outside. She might need to go in a cage outside and be covered at night for a while until she acclimatises.

In saying that though, if the weather is good over there at the moment than you may not need to worry about it. Here in SA it has come in freezing cold and sudden temperature change is stressful on the birds

The weather is great here, Liv. She would be fine in an aviary BUT she must be quarantined away from new birds for 30 days anyway and not straight in with her new friends.

Glen, if you need to borrow a spare cage for quarantine...just call in here and I will lend you one.

You lucky things. its like a yoyo here. Hot one day, cold the next. :(

Karyn ...I feel sure Glen would provide a great home for Kiwi :( There are a few of us here in Perth, but I am mostly into show budgies now. *libby* also who lives in Perth but I believe she is pretty full in her aviary at the moment with budgies, tiels and rabbits in her aviary. There is a member called Little One in Joondalup but she had some illnesses in her aviary to deal with.....not sure if she has yet. Paulh29 who was selling up his birds so most likely would have them anymore.

I also know people through my budgie clubs, but at this stage Glen would be just great I am sure :(

Thanks Kaz for the offer of the cage, I have talked to Karyn and she is going to get Libby to look after kiwi. While I would have love to have kiwi, I think it is better that Libby look after her as I would have had rush the completion of the avairy and then find some more birds so that Kiwi was not alone. Also this allows me to slow down and make sure everything is in place and perfect before I start getting more birds and building my flock, which no doubt I will be asking you and everyone on this forum alot of questions.

Cheers,

Glen

Thanks everyone for all your help with this. We are so lucky to have this forum!!

As Glen said Kiwi is going to a new home with Libby. I am still sad but I know she will be in safe hands and will have lots of new friends soon.

Hope we get to see some pictures of your aviary Glen when it is up and running. Good luck with it all.
