Posted March 2, 200916 yr I've decided I might as well make a breeding journal for my breeding pair here..hopefully people will read it lol. So, the parents are Storm and Cinder..this is their second clutch altogether (one last year) and first for this year. Storm is a Violet Continental Clearflight Pied Spangle Opaline..and Cinder is a Normal Mauve split for Rec. Pied. Storm is on the bottom left, Cinder the top right. So far they have 6 eggs, one of which is an egg fostered from my other pair who are also breeding at the moment, the other five are theirs. I candled them today (the 7th, if it will be laid, is due tomorrow) and 5 are most definetly fertile. One I'm not sure of, but I think it is as well though it is probably the one laid yesterday an therefore too young to tell. Storm always lays 5-6 eggs (out of 3 clutches she has had in total-one infertile as the partner escaped- she has had 5, then 6, then 5 eggs) Anyway, here's hoping everything goes well, I already have a person wanting 2 of the bubs, and I can, and want to, keep the rest! Will post daily pictures of the babies when they start hatching (first is due from the 11th-14th of this month..though Kyra, from the last clutch, hatched at 16 days so who knows) and updates. March 2, 200916 yr Any other pictures of storm? If i am looking at the right bird, looks like a plain old spangle to me. Cant see opaline or clearflights. Then i might be looking at the wrong bird More pics of parents?
March 2, 200916 yr Your birds look beautiful Jen, can't wait to see pics of the babies and what colours you get. :feedbirds:

Then i might be looking at the wrong bird  More pics of parents? Lol you are looking at the right bird. She is Clearflight Pied as you can see in these pics, she has the head spot and clear tail feathers, and her front has the white 'frosting'. She also has had 3 babies in all, 2 of which were obviously Clearflight Pieds. I'm not certain if she is Opaline but she does have colour through her wings..but I will be able to tell you for certain once her son has babies, he is paired to a normal female so if he is split Opaline I'll have some normal Opaline girls..I find Opaline Spangles are always confusing.. Here she is, and you can see the back of Cinder.. And an old one of her front:
March 3, 200916 yr Author Update: Storm now has SEVEN eggs!!!! I was so not expecting that! I know that 5 are fertile definetly, I couldn't see the 6th when I candled a few days ago as Storm was on top of it...but I suspect it too would be fertile. And now seven, of which 5 are fertile and the other 2 may be as well! Storm always did have a lot of fertile eggs..lol.. Are seven babies too much for her and her partner to take care of or should I foster 2 to another pair? The other pair are inexperienced and I am not sure how they will go, it is both of their's first clutch (mum and dad) so is seven okay for Storm or should I let the other pair have 2 of the babies.. I will of course see how they are with their own babies before I foster any more, but I guess I just need to know if seven is okay or should I risk letting the other pair that I am not sure of having more?
March 4, 200916 yr Author Anybody? I candled the eggs today and all are fertile and developing...so if all 7 happen to hatch and survive, what do I do? Plus, I think she might lay an eighth too.. Edited March 4, 200916 yr by Jen144
March 4, 200916 yr Depends on the parents. Watch them with the first few bubs, paying attention to the male especially. Sometimes cocks can feed chicks at the expense of their own health (or even forget to feed the hen). So as long as babies are getting fed and both parents are eating as well, should be fine. I have heard of hens laying and hatching 11 fertile eggs, then raising 10 (1 died). Of course the less chicks they raise, the less toll it takes on them. Its really up to your judgment. Sounds like they are an awesome couple
March 7, 200916 yr Author Seems like Storm has decided to stop at 8 eggs, all of which are fertile and alive... First is 18 days old on this Wednesday! :laughter:
March 9, 200916 yr Author A question about the other pair I am also breeding at the moment. The female has scaly face mites, and I have taken out all the eggs (3 of 4 were all addled anyway and the 4th was too young to tell but I had no choice ) and removed the nest. What I need to know is: The eggs were only 1 and 1/2 weeks old at maximum, would it be alright to treat her and her mate for the mites, and then when she is fine..give her a few weeks rest then try to breed her again? She has not hatched any babies at all this year, only incubated eggs for a few weeks. So, after she is fine and has had a few weeks rest, would it stress her too much to let her breed again? I will of course give her extra calcium as all the egg-laying would be taking its toll..

March 12, 200916 yr Author Yesterday afternoon I checked on Storm and Cinder, as the first egg was 18 days old. And one of the eggs was chirping at me! Lol. So I checked on them again this morning, and there was a little baby! Born later last night I assume. Happy, wamr and fed, so that's great. I tried to get a picture, but I didn't want to disturb the mum too much..so here it is, the little pink blob among the eggs.
March 13, 200916 yr Author Baby number two is here, and just as happy and healthy as the first! Just in case people are still reading this. Edited March 13, 200916 yr by Jen144
March 13, 200916 yr Author Okay here are some pics of the babies. I want to have pictures of them each day (or every second day, when the babies are hatching) so here are some of the two of them. I won't have good pics of them for a while yet, I'll start taking them out of the nest to handle every day when each one is about 10 days old. Edited March 13, 200916 yr by Jen144
March 14, 200916 yr Author My gosh. I was not expecting this. I just checked on the birds (actually to change their fruit & vege dish) and looked into the nest while I was there...and there were FOUR babies!!! I knew babies 3 and 4 would hatch on the same day, but they were due tomorrow! Will they be okay, hatching early? I assume (and hope) it is not because Storm was too eager to help them hatch and they hatched early, as happened with the last clutch one hatched too early because of Storm..and died... So yeah, will they be okay or should I keep a close eye on them to make sure they aren't too weak, hatching a day early? Someone here must have had a baby hatch early, at least once.. I think they hatched themselves, as both of them hatched (and only minutes ago seeing as how wet they and their egg shells still are) but with the quick look of both of them I got, one looks normal but the other's stomach area is like..very, swollen, I guess? Round, anyway. Is this bad or am I being paranoid?

I haven't been checking at all except every second day when a baby is due, I only happened to today because I went in to change the food and heard a lot of cheeping. Well, here's hoping they'll both be okay, I'll do what you said and check on them tomorrow morning. Next baby is due on Tuesday. (though it might hatch on Monday seeing as the other two hatched a day early? I don't know.)
March 14, 200916 yr Author Well, all four are fine this morning..I'll check again to make sure this evening, then leave them all alone til Tuesday, when number 5 is due! Here's a picture of the of them all piled on top of eachother. Look how big number one has gotten. Edited March 14, 200916 yr by Jen144
