Look What I Did!

Hi All.

I have finally finished the flight.

So far the birdies are a bit reluctant to go thru the aviary door. Hopefully they will!

The quails have no probs, love the grass.

What does everyone think? Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

The flight is 4m long, 1m wide and 1.8m high.

That is so cool!! Well done and look at all that flying space! :)

Take care with the open roofed section as wild birds droppings will come though and give your birds parasites and disease.

You can either put plastic or tin roofing on or you can suspend the open section by placing wire on the base, and then lifting it all off the ground high enough that you can get a lawn mower underneath still. :)

Well done!! :bliss:

That looks great, they have are lucky birds :)

A great space. As liv says cover the top with something. There is nothing but grass underneath ? Rats dig in and kill birds, so best you deal with the floor section now rather than after something has dug into your aviary.

The flight space is great! Your birds should be happy!

I agree with the mice thing. I like to provide my quail and budgies with grass too, but it makes the mice and rats easier to get in. A cheap idea to create a barrier is to go down to your local brick supplier and ask for a discount on any broken pavers. I lined the inside perimeter of my aviary with large pavers this way, and only paid $10 for about a dozen pavers. (All with minimal damage to them) We also mudded any extra holes with mortar, just to be on the safe side.

Once again, great setup!

Thanks for all the advice.

I was going to cover the roof with that waterproof shadecloth stuff. I lined the top of the fence next to the aviary with it to stop the rain getting in, seems to work well and isn't as hot underneath as tin.

As for the grass, I hadn't thought about mice or rats! I use ratsak in the aviary and have baits along the side of the aviary near the fence (totally unaccessible to anything I don't want dead!) but I think the paver idea along the inside sounds good.

Do I did them down or just place them next to the base?

You need a full floor that rats and mice cannot dig through. Concrete paving slabs or brick pavers.

I agree with the full floor. having a sealed floor also helps reduce worms, lice and mites that live and breed in the soil

on the floor put wire so no rats and mice cannot dig through

Some mice can get through bird wire.

Pearce is right...mice can get through bird wire than is 12 mm square diameter. They can get through normal aviary mesh that is the 25 by 12 mm as well.
