Posted February 23, 200916 yr Hi, Yesterday my son ended up unexpectedly getting two budgies, which with my son only being 2 and a half means I now have to learn how to look after them quickly. I asked my son what to call them so they are now Silvester and Tweety. Next pay I have to go out and buy a new cage for them as the one they arrived in is not good at all - they have no room to fly about, any advice on cages would be appreciated. They both appear to be young birds, I have no idea of their sex either. My only experience with birds was my sister's canaries, which was a very long time ago when I was 10. Any other advice would also be appreciated. Currently they are inside near an open window but not where they will get sun on them as I am concerned what the sun could do to Tweety as he has red eyes and that generally seems to mean they are more affected than usual by the sun. Is this an okay spot or is there more ideal location for them (just wanting a general idea of what is needed in the location they are)? I don't want these birds to just survive, I want them to have a good life so I will appreciate all the help I can get. Silvester Tweety Thanks for all your help, Lauren.
February 23, 200916 yr welcome it looks like you have to boys ( as i mentioned in your other post) and i am going to take a guess of what mutation so dont blame me when im wrong im not good with these things... yellow lutino cock and a reccessive pied skyblue cock? haha well that was a guess sunlight on tweety should be no differnce from what i know but once again if soemone says soemthing different to me they are 99.9 percent right. good luck with these cuties
February 23, 200916 yr Check out the FAQ section for cage suggestions. I like what is commonly called Flight cages they are twice as wide as they are high. Are they going to get some out of the cage time? If not them going for something as big as a HQ 13221 cage like this But it all comes down as budget and what you can afford. Stay clear of of anything with dome or peck tops waste of space. try for natural branches in the cages, the general rule is their feet should wrap around the branch about 3/4th of the way. Having them near an open window is great, natural sun is also fine as long as they can get out of it if they need to. Just make sure they don't get in a draft as they get cold quick and that will make them sick. There are a few posts about members cages great place to start

The cere looks too blue for an ino. I would say your yellow bird is a Double Factor Yellow Spangle. Edited February 23, 200916 yr by renee
February 26, 200916 yr Author I got Tweety and Silvester their new cage last night and now they seem much happier. Basing my idea that they are happier off the fact they are now talking and not just sitting in one spot all day. Tweety is enyoying himself flying about (he's the better flyer of the two). He has started acting wierd to Silvester though, he seems to be trying to court him or something - he keeps side steping closer and futher away from Silvester, throwing in a random twirl on the spot and an occasional short flight half circling Silvester but flying back to the same spot. One bad thing I have notice already about this cage is that they can open some of the doors - would it be okay to keep them closed with zip ties or would wooden pegs be better?
February 26, 200916 yr Great cage Perches however are better running front to back so they can fly across the width of the cage. Perches like that one has is just good for sidling along and less useful for real flying exercise. I use cable ties for any door I need to mostly keep shut. Apart from that use whatever works best for you Edited February 26, 200916 yr by KAZ
February 26, 200916 yr Awesome cage!! i love seeing them in cages that make the budgies look so tiny I agree with Kaz on turning the perches. I also agree that your Tweety is Lutino
February 28, 200916 yr Hey, that cage is pretty much identical to the one I have! How about that. I like how you can pull out the floor, makes it so much easier to clean. My birds love their cage. I've got the perches running from front to back though. I've also got a swing, a mirror with bells on the bottom and a ladder in my cage. It's a great size for 2 birds.
