Posted February 21, 200916 yr Hi, I have just bought a new budgie home. the first day he sat onthe perch and didn't do much-that was okay, but the second third and fourth day (today) he will usually sit only on the floor and can sit in the same place without moving at all for up to 17-18 hours. The pet shop said it may be stress and to leave him to himself, which is what we have done, he really doesn't seem to eat and I have tried seed, aplle and silverbeet as suggested by pet shop. I am very concerned about this lovely bird. I really hope it will be okay, and would really love some advice.
February 21, 200916 yr Hi and welcome... sorry we have met in such circumstances... Can you post a photo? (follow the links in my signature, or PM me and I will help you) some questions... does he still have the bars on his head (maybe he is too young to be away from his parents), is he fluffed up, does he have a pooy bum, can you feel his chest/keel bone... we need more information on him. In the mean time, pop a lamp over him- 40w, to warm him up... warmth is good and might make him feel a little better.
February 21, 200916 yr I agree with Maesie, A photo would really help. If he is sitting on the bottom and not moving and not eating than i would say he is sick. He may be sick from an illness of sick from not eating (caused by stress) You may need to take him to an avian vet.
February 21, 200916 yr Sometimes pet shops sell young babies that are not fully weaned. Your bird may not know how to eat and digest seed properly, that would cause sickness.
February 22, 200916 yr Ow this is so sad. I can't offer any words of wisdom but all the info above sounds great. Keep us updated and it is fantastic that you care so much about your little one.
February 22, 200916 yr Rule number one with budgies who arent acting normal...... Dont look them square in the face... UPEND them, and check their butt. A mucky poopy bottom shows signs of illness and signs of not eating. Second thing to check is body weight...does it feel lightweight to you ? and does it have a sharp feel to the keelbone ( runs vertically down the front if its chest ) ? If you have both those things happeneing you have a sick budgie. Lamp for warmth and vet visit.
February 22, 200916 yr Kaz is right, we also have a great FAQ section and article on how to tell if your budgie is sick. Most budgies even if they are scared of their enviroment will perch or hang on the cage sitting on the bottom is not good. Do what Kaz said and keep us updated.
