Posted February 20, 200916 yr My hens in the aviary who all about 18 months old have started fighting, there is 4 that are the main culprits and it is used to be just getting cranky with each other but today i have 3 with injuries from fighting. The aviary is not overcrowded, there is plenty of perches and food dishes and water, no nestboxs. Why would they be carrying on like this and any ideas to stop them. i have put the worst offender in a cage by herself.
February 20, 200916 yr it is laverne right? I am sorry it is. What has she done? Extent of injuries? Hard to say on a reason. Your set up looks big enough. there is nothing that they may think is a breeding space? They are not fighting for ownership of anything are they? I am not sure what you can do.

It was not Laverne this time, it is Gwenieve i have had to remove because she is picking on Laverne and couple of my hens and caused an all out brawl.Laverne has come out of the fight missing one of her claws but she has also got blood on her beak so she put up a good fight. There is nothing i can think of they could use as breeding area, i have a little bit of hay on the ground for the quails but the budgies do not go to ground that much.
February 20, 200916 yr it is funny as she has never been an aggressive bird, well, she was not aggressive when she was younger anyway. Maybe it is hormonal?!?!?!?!?!?!
February 20, 200916 yr Author put some men in there to temper the ladies i have 8 females and 4 males in the aviary so should you have the same number of each sex to stop the fighting. The problem is that it is the hens that have partners that are doing the fighting.

February 21, 200916 yr I agree, you need more males. i always have more cocks than hens and it keeps the peace in the aviaries. Hens always compete for mates, and if there is not much choice then there is going to be fights. WOOP! deb gets to go shopping Edited February 21, 200916 yr by **Liv**
April 11, 200916 yr I agree, you need to make sure the number of males at least equals, if not exceeds, the number of females. I recommend at least 2 more males than females. That way the girls have less to fight about. And I'd suggest putting nesting boxes in, with 1-2 boxes per pair. Don't place them too close together. That should sort out the problems. If it doesn't, you may just have to separate them.

I do not put nestboxs in my aviary, i used to colony breed but now cabinet breed.
