Ernie Meets Ozzy

okay well quarantine has finally ended for Ernie and Ozzie.

Liv told us that Ozzy ended up being a hen, but we decided we wanted her anyway as she is a real sweetie. But now I can't tell if they really like each other or hate each other or just can't make their minds up. Ernie is moulting and is a bit more grumpy than usual, but still not too bad. Sometimes they seem to ignore each other other times they look as if they're feeding each other and other times they chase each other around sqwarking. Is this normal??

They live in seperate cages that are next to each other as they both seem to be attached to their own cage, but they both come out an play together when ever we are at home.

What should I look out for in case they're not getting along? What do budgies that get along well do? Is it okay to keep them in seperate cages next to each other?

Behavior such as the angry dolphin noise, beak fighting, squawking are indication that they still need time to adjust to each other. I know Pretty tried to mount Merlin too so it wasn't that they didn't like each other they had to figure it all out.

Any type of social behavior, such as talking to each other, preening, feeding each other are signs they are doing fine.

Keeping them in separate cages for the first week of introduction is what I did but I let them play outside of the cage and in each others cages but didn't house them together until I felt everything was smooth and looking good.

Squawking is okay, its fighting that's bad. If they feed each other than that says to me they are getting along well.

Ozzie is a hen and will tend to be more bossy, and Ernie is moulting, so will be more grumpy... things will settle in time :D

would love to see photos :)

Haha, thanks. They both look really healthy to me - touch wood!! Trust me you'll soon get flooded by my questions if they show any signs of ill health!

The picture is Leon Pericles "In search of the lost city mountains". I think his art is really interesting: http://www.leonpericles.com.au/

(I think the budgie poo in the top of the frame just adds to the appeal!)

Are both birds tame Hills? they are really nice birds, I also love the playgym you have. Well done.

They're both finger tame. In the mornings they both sit by their doors and immediately jump onto my finger ready to come out and at night time, they both happily step up to go back in their cages, but if you try to put them away early, you have a bit of a chase on your hands. Ernie will happily sit on your shoulder all day, but Ozzie will fly off every time you walk past the play gym.

Thanks

By The Way these are their cages. I know Ozzies is not ideal but it was only supposed to be a quarentine cage, but she has become attached to it (besides the colour really suits her ^_^) . She spends most of her time on top of Ernie's cage anyway. I did try putting her in Ernie's cage, but she just looked really nervous and Ernie just sat on his favourite perch and closed his eyes. As soon as I put her back in her own cage, they both continued playing with their toys.
