Posted February 11, 200916 yr My hen has chucked two eggs out of her nest box onto the ground, and they have broken, but she does not eat them, What do I do? She has had 1 clutch previously very succesfully. Thanks Kirsty
February 11, 200916 yr More info on her and how long has t been since her last clutch? Generally they do it when they feel theyare not ready to breed or conditions aren't right. A good rest is the best remedy. If she has already been rested then try giving her some pebbles to sit on when she lays the next egg as she shouldn't be able to pick them up to chuck them and it may break the habit
February 11, 200916 yr I agree..more information..... How long has she sat on these eggs ? Have you candled them to see if they are fertile ? Has she got a supportive partner ? Is she is a breeder cabinet ? Is she in an aviary ? What other birds are in with her ? Is she hot ? Is she unwell ? etc More information....you dont have to pay by the letter here......type away !!
February 11, 200916 yr Author Lemon chucked the two eggs out just after she laid the second egg, so she hadn't started sitting yet. She has a supportive partner, in an aviary with another breeding pair (who now have one egg). She seems very healthy. We have had some hot weather, but now it is cool - but it wasn't really that hot where we are, so I don't think that would be the problem. Lemon had chucked one egg out, and then I changed the nest box, because she had made a hole in the bottom, and then she chucked the second egg out. The last clutch are now four months old, so she did get a rest without the nest boxes for a few months. Thanks for your help, maybe she will lay some more eggs especially now that her neighbours have one egg (do they know when others lay eggs ???????) Thankyou. February 11, 200916 yr Is it possible the other hen chucked the egg out? Or did you actually see Lemon chuck it out? When colony breeding some jealous hens will go into others nesting boxes and throw eggs out.
February 11, 200916 yr Author I have not seen Lemon chuck them out, so i suppose it would have been blossom, will she stop that now that she has an egg herself? Thankyou Kirsty
February 11, 200916 yr I agree with Pearce....usually the other hens throw the eggs out. You have to be very careful here, as even once things move along, a hen in an aviary with others can decide she wants nestbox, and kill and throw out live chicks to take over a nestbox.
