Second from left for me please! :)

Oh... Um in Vic it's illegal to sell them before 8 weeks, I figured it was the same everywhere...

Apparently not the same everywhere :) In NSW they must legally be 6 weeks from a private seller and pet shops are not allowed to sell or accept pups until 8 weeks, for private sellers who are registered breeders their code of ethics states that for proper social development, etc they should be atleast 8 weeks. Apparently in WA (not positive though) the rule is also 8 weeks. Interesting there is such a difference between states...

Sorry, changing it again...

Just found the Draft Code of Practic from the NSW DPI for the Breeding of Cats and Dogs

Here: http://www.dogsnsw.org.au/upload/documents...0and%20Cats.pdf

9 TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP

Objective

The transfer of ownership of animals should be used to promote socially responsible pet

ownership.

9.1.1 Standards

9.1.1.1 Puppies and kittens must be 8 weeks of age before they are offered for sale or

advertised.

9.1.1.2 Dogs and cats must not be re-homed to people less than 18 years of age.

9.1.1.3 No dog or puppy, cat or kitten may be sold unless vaccinated in compliance with the

requirements of Section 8.2 of this Code.

9.1.1.4 All dogs and cats re-homed must be microchipped, and treated to remove

gastrointestinal parasites prior to release.

9.1.1.5 No dog or cat suspected of being sick, injured or diseased may be sold under any

circumstances.

9.1.1.6 At the time of purchase, clients must be offered accurate written information at no

charge which concerns the care of animals purchased.

9.1.1.7 If within 3 days a dog or cat is not acceptable to the purchaser for any reason, the

breeder is required to take the dog or cat back and refund 50% of the purchase price

of the animal.

9.1.1.8 The guarantee required by Clause 9.1.1.7 must be provided in writing to the

purchaser at the point of sale.

Just be careful Jenene because it seems that even advertising them as ready for sale before 8 weeks is an offence (something which I didn't realise)

I asked my vet who has been very involved with the care of my pups and he was quite happy for me to offer the pups for sale. As I had to take them away from their mother because she had milk fever, I had to take over the complete care of them from 4 weeks of age. I keep in close contact with all the owners and their puppies are making wonderful progress.

Please don't get me wrong Jenene, I ain't having a go at all and I know you would NEVER sell them unless you felt they were ready ;)

But do be careful still as despite what your vet said you can still be fined just under $3000 for selling pups under the age specified in the code of practice, regardless of what your vet says it's the law and applies to all people breeding animals, might be worth mentioning it to your vet next time you see him as he may simply not be aware. I have worked in the NSW and Vic pet industries as well as in the vic DSE/DPI and they DO check up on people and after all the expenses you had pulling Bella through the last thing you need s a fine. Many people, including vets, get confused between 'standards' and 'guidelines' and treat the age thing as a 'guideline' (which means it isn't prosecutable under law) but the age is actually a 'standard' which means they can prosecute for it.

I new this was how it worked in Vic and I had thought the same for NSW but then found something on another forum which said six weeks (hence my earlier confusion) but the code of practice is very clear.

Thanks for that MB, I will remember that!! I always thought 6 weeks was the "norm" and didnt even realise they had to be 8 weeks before selling.I'm not going to breed again for a long time anyway, probably a couple of years!!

No worries, I hope you didn't feel I was getting stuck into you. I wasn't so much worried about the pups as the expense you might get that's all, although you might get off with a warning if your vet gave you poor advice as he should know better...

No MB I wouldnt think that of you!! I appreciate any help or advice I can get!!

MB and Jenene this is funny you brought this up because this was brought up on a dog board I belong too and here in the US 8 wks is when you can legally sell them here too. Why? There have been studies that during the 4th - 8th week this is when puppies learn social ladders, bite inhibition, standards on being a dog by playing with their litter mates, it is kind of like budgies if you take them away too early they don't learn certain skills. This is why 8wks is now a standard among different countries because they have learned for most puppies they will be more socially fit for their future ahead of them. It is good you keep in close contact with the owners incase a problem ever arose but it is certain something to read up on especially if you decide to have another little down the road.

Here are some links to read over they are very interesting.
