Posted February 9, 200916 yr Hi there, I'm very confused about my albino Casper. This is the first photo I put up and the thought was boy. okay this is the second photo I put up when I thought Casper's cere had changed to a brownie colour and the general thought was girl. Now I'm in doubt again as Casper's cere is currently a dusky/pinky colour, not the brown that hens get. I would like to confirm that she is a SHE as I have paired her up with Oliver and it'll be a little pointless expecting nature to take its course if she happens to be a HE. They are getting along fine, lots of feeding each other and preening and beak clicking and intently staring at each other face to face. But other than that I have not seen anything that tells me they're interested in making babies. I know it's probably obvious to experts but I'm struggling especially when the budgies don't develop the ceres that are easy to identify and leaves me feeling like a big idiot. Any info appreciated thanks Derricka
February 9, 200916 yr Actually even in that first photo I would have said girl as I can see white cere rings.
February 9, 200916 yr Cere colour hasnt changed much since you posted in August. If hen I would expect to see brown cere by now after 4 to 5 months has past. Also how can you be sure of age for breeding when it seemed young in August and may not yet be old enough ?
February 9, 200916 yr Looks male to me. It's cere looks pink not brown Eggs-actly what I think too
February 9, 200916 yr The cere looks brown on my monitor, the third picture confirms it. I am saying HEN. How old is this bird? Edited February 9, 200916 yr by Rainbow
February 9, 200916 yr It looks like a cock to me too. I have a male recessive pied who has a cere very like that one.
February 9, 200916 yr Author Thanks everyone...I thought boy also. From what I'm learning on here I thought to question my doubts especially when it comes to sexing budgies. Kaz, not yet breeding, just wanting to pair up and see who will bond with who. Still a few months to wait before that. Just that it's hard to judge whats what when I'm not an expert. But with my questions and doubts I'm learning what I need to know. If Casper's a boy then I won't leave him with Oliver to bond because like I said pretty pointless if I want nature to take its course. Since finding this forum I've become very aware of my responsibilities as a good bird owner and I try to stick by that. I love my birds and wouldn't risk breeding earlier than I should.
February 9, 200916 yr This is the brown of a female albinos cere compared to and China my lacewing cock What behaviour indicators are you seeing if any ? Edited February 9, 200916 yr by KAZ
February 9, 200916 yr Author Casper's cere definitely resembles your lacewing's cere. (very pretty bird by the way) Both birds do a lot a chatting, Oliver more so than Casper. They feed each other constantly. They do a lot of beak clicking and staring at each other. Oliver is more insistent, but on a few occasions Casper has done the chasing. Ollie has on a couple of occasions tried to put his foot up on Casper but has been firmly rejected by Casper moving away quickly or pecking at Ollie. They have been together for a couple of months now and their behaviour (to me any way) does not indicate a boy and girl relationship. I've only had the one breeding pair and unfortunately I missed 99% of their courtship ritual so sadly I'm still unsure of what to expect. Thanks Derricka
February 10, 200916 yr The cere looks brown on my monitor, the third picture confirms it. I am saying HEN. How old is this bird? Got to agree with Rainbow... Looks like a hen in this shot.
February 10, 200916 yr Author Thanks for all the replies. I just don't know what's going on with this budgie. And It's such mixed thoughts about his/her gender. Anyway I've put him/her back in the aviary with the other birds. Maybe I'll catch him/her doing something natural (like laying an egg) that'll confirm his/her gender . For now I think I'll stop thinking about confirming it and it might just smack me in the face one day and then I can run back to my computer and tell you all. And just for general info this budgie is approx. 9-12 months of age. Edited February 10, 200916 yr by dek21
