Show Cage Damage

Featured Replies

Posted

I am looking to go to my first show in 3 weeks' time.

I got out one of my brand new show cages and the wire front is showing some light signs of rust. Any idea's why it's happened and how to get rid of it?

Have had them stored in the garage out of sunlight since I bought them last year.

Hi If any of my breeding cages go rusty I sand them back and use rust-oleum (I think thats what its called). Are you not allowed to show budgies if the cage has a small amount of rust? Maybe look here http://www.kbs-coatings.com/

I've also heard you can soak the wire in vinegar for 24 hours then it will rub off, am yet to try it.

Take the wire cage front off by undoing the grubscrew at the top in the middle ( use an allen key the right size )...undo, lift up and out. Then use steel wool ( steelo soap pads etc ) to take the surface rust off.

Wipe down with a very thin smear of vegetable oil and put back.

The current standard is now changed to Powder Coated. Many of us are getting our fronts done together at a cheap price.

Talk to your club about this. They should be able to help.

No, you arent allowed to show with cages with rusty cage fronts. Rust-oleum os a chemical I would not put anywhere near where a birds beak is likely to go.

Powder coated!! Holy ***, I wish they would just stick with a format, I can't afford to change things every time someone gets a whim. Glad I haven't invested in lots of show cages yet

Thanks for the info, will put steel wool on tomorrows shopping list.

I kind of panicked a bit when I saw the rust.

At least the hen settled into the cage quickly :)

There's a few year to change over. You can't be penalised for a marked cage during that time.

I clean the rust off the same as Kaz does, I keep all my show cages wrapped in cotton wadding and then wrapped in a big plastic black bag and stored on top of a wardrobe, I have 16 show cages stored this way and have not had a rust problem at all. But I do have 14 show cages that I have on display in my bird room which I train my birds.
