All of this just proves a point........there is a lot of info out there they may either be from old books, old theories, or old wives tales ;) If the truth is to be known ask the people breeding these birds.

Anyone know how crested came about?

I've seen some really odd looking crests and you'd almost swear they are feather dusters that have become "stable" for want of a better term.
