April 12, 200916 yr Author Here is the nest of chicks now............ Four chicks hatched. And of three eggs left in the nest ....they were all poopy and it looked like not hatching at all, I noticed today that they were stone cold, the hen had kept pushing them off to the side, and they were heavily stained. I believed them to be dead in shell from contamination. I was removing them to the rubbish bin, and they felt real cold. As I went to the bin, I started to open one up to check at which stage the chick had died, when I heard a loud peeping sound coming from the egg I had just begun to open....the chick was inside wriggling all about and peeping loudly...it was alive and well and near due to hatch normally. At that stage I had to finish what I had started and helped the chick hatch. All looked well, so it was put in the nestbox with its brothers and sisters. But the fact that they were so much bigger and it so tiny meant it hadnt been fed by late afternoon today. I removed it to a nest where all chicks will be blue ( this one is green series ) and at dusk tonight it had been fed and was well. Needless to say, even though the other two eggs looked dead, I put them back in the nestbox. Great sounds like he might be too much trouble for you!!!! Here it is ( will be a DF spangle looks like ) aged 7 days Other chicks from this pair so far a DF spangle yellow, another looks to be a cinnamon spangle, another not yet feathered enough to tell and another possibly in a foster nest.

May 6, 200916 yr Author What a merical that little bub has been. It's amazing how they can keep going even when stone cold. He looks lovely and healthy - well done There were two miracle chicks in that nest Liv. The last egg was found broken in the nestbox, and I removed it to find the chick inside was still alive, egg was too broken to reseal and the egg was broken too early for normal hatching. I removed the chick and it still had a white bag attached to an umbilical cord. The area where the cord attached was bleeding.....I stemmed the bleeding and put a spot of betadine on its navel area. Then I cleaned it up as best I could and put it in another nestbox. Afterwards a chick in the new foster nest died so I didnt know if it was this second miracle baby who had died or another chick. Today I have the answer as the chick is feathering up to be a spangle hen.....so the second miracle chick also made it and here she is........... so in all the result from the spangle to spangle pairing seems to be 1 greygreen spangle, 1 cinnamon grey green spangle 2 DF yellow spangles and this latest one which is a grey green opaline spangle...maybe cinnamon...time will tell. = 5 spangle babies Edited May 6, 200916 yr by KAZ
