Posted January 31, 200916 yr Hi all I noticed that Hibiscus is safe for budgies when looking in the faq. I have a bush out the front that I beleive to be a hibiscus. Can someone please identify it for me? If it is safe, what part do you feed the birds? The flowers or the leaves?
January 31, 200916 yr Yes it is hibiscus...and yes...safe for birds. We feed the whole branch, flowers and all. Wash branches down with the hose.
January 31, 200916 yr Author okay Thanks very much KAZ Do you feed it to the breeding birds with chicks aswell?
January 31, 200916 yr okay Thanks very much KAZ Do you feed it to the breeding birds with chicks aswell? To be honest Pearce mostly my budgies dont go as mad over it as they do peppermint. I prefer to give them peppermint as it helps with digestive issues and is a kind of worm medicine too. My husbands parrots love the hibiscus more. I also put branches in my budgie aviary. The breeding cage birds get so much good stuff in the form of soft food, soaked seed, vegies etc and peppermint twice a week in the breeder cages, that I dont give the hibiscus much, If short of greens or other things I will give hibiscus leaves. January 31, 200916 yr Author okay Thanks very much KAZ I will look into growing some peppermint. I made a small garden a few weeks back and threw all my seed left overs in their. Now the seed is growing everywhere. I pick some of the grasses from there and bunch them up and rubber band the end. It lasts a fair while and they love it.

I dont mean the mint kind of peppermint...I mean peppermint tree. It will take you years to grow a peppermint tree worth taking branches off. I do the same as you about sprouting and growing leftover seed....great way to get them good food and the babies seems to know what it is the second they leave the nestbox. January 31, 200916 yr Author okay Thanks very much, Do you have a peppermint tree or do you buy the peppermint from supermarkets?
January 31, 200916 yr okay Thanks very much, Do you have a peppermint tree or do you buy the peppermint from supermarkets? Peppermint trees grow all over Perth. They are all around us. I find trees that are not where weed spraying is occurring, and not by roadsides. I pick and wash and serve.
January 31, 200916 yr Author okay Thanks very much. So far I have gum tree leaves and hibiscus. Im going to see if I've got anything else native around me that the birds might like,
January 31, 200916 yr HI Kaz. How long do the leaves stay fresh in your aviary for? Two or three days before they end up just naked bits of branch.
