Posted January 29, 200916 yr I have lost count of the number of times I've been out to check on the birds today. The temp at my house is currently reading as 46 degrees on my thermometer near the back door and also on the one in my car so that's a pretty accurate reading. I have hosed the birds 4 or 5 times already, no need to worry about wet aviaries, they are dry again within half an hour, they really seem to apreciate the hosing though, they chat happily for about an hour after and then gradually start to look bothered again. I have two corellas, two lorikeets and my yellow rosella in small cages in the entrance hall as their aviaries have no shelter from the sun and I didn't fancy having to go all the way to the back of the yard all the time to hose them. My poor rosella dropped all his tail feathers when I caught him this morning  The majority of the budgies are in the large flight in the garage which is still hot but atleast gets no radiant heat from the sun and they haven't gone to ground at all in there so I think we are coping alright. Meanwhile I'm hot and bothered from all the running around hosing birds and checking on birds, made worse by the fact that I'm starting to get morning sickness so feeling pretty (< wish that was happening here though) ANyway, that's my vent, how's everyone else coping with the heat?
January 29, 200916 yr I am at work so all I can do is worry that the air con has broken or that it blew up or that all my birds have died while I have been at work! Oh I want to go home NOW
January 29, 200916 yr It's 42 here today. All my quarantine birds are in my spare room anyway so they've had the air con all day. My partner bought my other three inside at about 1:30 and I thouhgt they were dead! they were laying on the bottom of the cage all spread out and looking really bothered! I think they were bought in at exactly the right time.. They are happily talking to my cat at the moment.. lol
January 29, 200916 yr When they go to ground like that you have to start to worry, half of my avairy was like that when I brought them in last night.
January 29, 200916 yr I'd love a bird room with an a/c in it too MB It was 47 yesterday (too hot to have a bath in water that temp) and it was 45 today. It's almost 9pm and still 40.3 degrees. I have too many birds to bring inside so have been misting them every hour or so with the hose, rigging up shade cloth and hanging wet sheets (thanks to Kaz's great advice) so mine are doing okay for now. Still lots of heat to go though so hopefully they all pull though.
January 29, 200916 yr I've been at work all day... very hot in our tin shed!!! and then went to my sister's place to cool down in the Air Conditioning. My beloved parents have been hosing the birds/aviary down... bless them. Most of the have gone to ground but Dad has been keeping an eye on the and added some ice to their water.
January 29, 200916 yr mine are doing well, i hose them every hour or so and brought them all in yesterday but really with having 8 tiels as well its just too many. Budgies went back outside last night and tiels will this morning. Will keep a close eye on them though. hey with the wet sheets do you hang them on the inside or the outside of the aviary?
January 29, 200916 yr I hang the wet sheets on the outside of the avairy, takes the direct sun off and also as the breeze flows through it cools the air, only issue is the sheets are dry in like 5 mins!
January 30, 200916 yr well my birds all went to ground yesterday i totally was beside myself i got my mist spray bottle and went inside the aviry and started spraying i lost to chicks to my own stupid fault just hatched too as i removed all the nest box doors for ventilation and placed them hard up inside the cages against the wire but two chicks fell out onto floor of aviry and were dead before i could save them another older chick savived so i amediatly went to work cutting cardbord and putting air holes in it as light weaight replacment doors i dont normally breed through dec to march but this year put a few birds down in the end i removed all birds back into aviry and placed all newly hatched chicks between two pairs that are coping well with the heat i am altanating chicks dayly resting one pair then returning chicks resting other pair two chicks are left with the resting pair at all times their is seven alternating chicks all up this is not a normal practic of mine i normally would not interfear with chicks at all but in this case for birds and chicks i belive it is best they all seem less stressed and the chicks better fed today i made some copper mess doors and replaced the full doors with them all hens and chicks so much better for this as the air flow is constent i replace doors at night and up at 5 am to replace with mess ones for day i placed shallow dishes of water all over the floor and refill every time they become warm the birds sit in them some even lay down in them fresh water mellon and cellery tomartos have been welcomed taking them out after an hour and mist spray every hour and hose aviry down once at around 2 pm wetting the shade cloth down i find the hot wind the worse so have decided to hang my bamboo blinds a few centermeters off the wire and keep them down to stop the warm breeze birds were way better today than yesterday so i must be doing something right oh drilled holes in roof to let heat through big diffrents with that got to go been told lol
January 30, 200916 yr Its not as hot here but I'm still spraying the roof of the aviary every hour or so. Some birds don't take well to the heat at all.
February 3, 200916 yr Its not too hot here but this is what im doing wiht my budgie: *Spraying him with water *Replacing the water *Putting in icecubes in the water
February 4, 200916 yr well my birds all went to ground yesterday i totally was beside myself i got my mist spray bottle and went inside the aviry and started spraying i lost to chicks to my own stupid fault just hatched too as i removed all the nest box doors for ventilation and placed them hard up inside the cages against the wire but two chicks fell out onto floor of aviry and were dead before i could save them another older chick savived so i amediatly went to work cutting cardbord and putting air holes in it as light weaight replacment doors I replace nestbox doors with spare aviary mesh cut to size during hot days and put the nestbox lid back on for night times.
February 4, 200916 yr yes i already fixed my problem that next day i made copper wire mesh doors for daytime and i also replace doors at night great minds think alike hay kaz lol i will try post some pics what i did latter if bro will let me think im getting kicked off real soon

That was a good idea Kaz.
