Posted January 28, 200916 yr At the moment I clean my cages and small aviary daily with a pant scraper to remove the **** from the trays in the button as they are out side and when I use paper it just blows up and around my birds so I can't. How often should I scrub it all down? I'm going to start also using that home made cleaner on here if I can find it. I also clean there food and water dishes daily. Anything else I should do?
January 28, 200916 yr Sounds pretty good to me. Personally i would keep the paper on top of the grill, i know you said the wind blows it, is there anything you can use to hold the paper down? It makes cage cleaning so much easier. Cleaning daily is great I normally do a big clean once a month. Personally i use vinigar to clean cages, perches and feed containers etc. the sun is a really good disinfectant too
January 29, 200916 yr if you have paper in the cage that blows around, put something like a heavy food dish int eh cage. For example, you can use an old ramikin. Get four small ones, fill with seed and some with water, and place ont eh cage floor in the corners. That will provde food and water, as well as holding the paper down.
January 29, 200916 yr This is what I do: I have one budgie and I keep a bit of butcher's paper on the bottom of his cage (above the grill) which I change daily. His ladder is longish so it holds the paper down plus, with the summer heat, I've had a small bowl of very, very shallow water in the bottom as well. I wash his water container every day as, with it being wet, I don't want it to get 'furry' and I change his seed (ensuring I wipe the feeder down if any poo gets on there). If there is any cucumber juice on the bars (my boy loves his cuies!) I give that a wipe and if there is any stray poo clinging to his perches, swing etc that gets wiped off as well. Once every 2 or 3 days I take the bottom tray out and toss the stray seeds into the garden. Once a week I take his cage out the back and give it 'the treatment' - a nice scrubdown of every single surface followed by drying it lightly with a towel then the rest is up to the sun. The budgie, meanwhile, is inside having his out of cage time and playing with homever is babysitting him A little cleaning everyday, just like you do now, seems to keep the cage reasonably clean.
January 29, 200916 yr It sounds like you are doing an excellent job and your cleaning puts us all to shame. ***, i would hire you to come to my house and clean!!! Cucumbers hey? Never thought of trying that. Might give it a go. So do you peel them? What about cucumber seeds? don't they have some seeds in the middle?
January 31, 200916 yr It *sounds* like a lot of cleaning but it isn't - I do it all before my breakfast in the morning and only takes 10 minutes and a full clean only takes around 20 minutes (full clean happened today). Cucumbers are my Gill's most favourite food - cut off about 3cm length, then cut in the middle (keep one half wrapped up and in the fridge for later) then either put a slit in the remaining cucumber and pop it on the bars to hold or put it on the table and your little one will totter over and eat away. Also, you can just cut thicker slithers and pop that in the bars. He loves Love LOVES the cucumber seeds and the skin although, I must admit, I'm a little concerned about the effects of that on his tummy so he gets to induldge in a little skin but not too much. Ops, you have 40 budgies? ayecarumba...in that case I'd just slit the cucumber down the middle and pop both sides (seed up) in the feeding tray. I can by the photo that your little one already enjoys his red foods....and his face is stained....expect the same with cucumber
