Posted January 26, 200916 yr Hi there, I just checked the forecast and for my area (Western District, Victoria) it will be 39+ degrees for the next 3 days, the forecast for Friday is not in yet. The lucky kids get this nice weather on their first week back at school! I just thought also for those of us that work and haven't checked the forecast that my warning might give you the chance to prepare for the hotter weather this week with your budgies. Cheers, Trish.
January 26, 200916 yr We just suffered the heatwaves in Sydney.....last Saturday was particularly bad. My lad spent most of his day inside his cucumber and I had the rotating fan blowing on him with a cold damp towel draped over the top of his cage....but I was wondering how people with aviaries deal with their birds....I know these are native Aussies but the heat would be unbearable for the poor things.
January 26, 200916 yr I saw Trish and am NOT looking forward to it. Not only do I work in a shed, I live it a unit which gets very hot and my poor birds inside and out!!! Hopefully it won't get as hot as they predict.
January 26, 200916 yr Author I saw Trish and am NOT looking forward to it. Not only do I work in a shed, I live it a unit which gets very hot and my poor birds inside and out!!! Hopefully it won't get as hot as they predict. I live inland...near Casterton and it always gets waaaay hotter than they predict, mostly 4-5 degrees above! I have just been out to the aviary and caught ALL my budgies and brought them into same sex cages inside. The aviary used to have a tree over it but it fell down so they don't get as much shelter as they used to from the sun. I have an evaporative cooler I bought from Safeways, just a cheapie but it does take the edge off and put it in the old laundry which is now a birdroom! I also have some oscillating fans in there. I hope you and your birds are o.k. Cheers, Trish.
January 26, 200916 yr I live in Geelong, so we often get the sea breeze of a night, which takes the edge off things. But if the nights are hot, I'll be a very grumpy girl by the end of the week!
January 26, 200916 yr The lucky kids get this nice weather on their first week back at school. I realize what l'm about to say is way off topic but l just had to say something. I have been on this board now for close to 3 years now. l live half way around the world, so when it is your winter it is my summer and vice versa. It never fails when one of you from Australia mentions that the kids are going back to school after being on there summer holidays. Makes me say "what the?". You see l find it funny because the kids here are still in school and had no summer break until June to September. The same applies for Christmas in summer, l find it to be weird but neat. I know that you might be saying to yourself, "who really cares" but l just wanted to let that out of my system. :bliss: :bliss: :bliss: Edited January 26, 200916 yr by birdluv typos

January 28, 200916 yr If your birds go to ground, dont disturb them in any way. Its their way of coping and shutting down to keep cool. Glad my suggestions earlier are helping liv:)

January 28, 200916 yr Thank goodness it will only be a chilly 35 on Monday! don't go thanking anyone too soon Hills, looks like we won't see anything below 40 on Monday and every day leading up to it, some are even suggesting the heat wave will last until Feb 9... At least in melbourne you get the breeze from the Bass Strait. As for the birds, I can't believe how much the little critters are suffering. Mine are fortunate...at the moment. They're in a cage that can be moved in and out of the house. Had to bring the poor things in this morning at 6am! It was already 34 and they were panting already. Dread to think how they'll cope when they go into the aviary.
January 28, 200916 yr Oh great, not another 15 day heat wave like last year!! They said on the news we might break our all time record tomorrow of 46.1.

Who would have ever imagined we would see temperatures like that in Adelaide. Fingers crossed for some decent relief...soon.
