Shannon, that was fast. They were only 8 - 9 weeks old. If your going to get into show birds, you need to let them mature.

yes i no daz but thay all whant the babys so i gave up and sold tham

Who is "they all"? Unless they are someone extremely important to me I'd be holding onto them until I can determine which ones will be the best and which ones should be culled...

yes jimmy thay did not look at good i sill have the mum and dad so i can breeder more the best on died so i culled tham

Shannon What did you mean by " the best on died so i culled tham" ?

Shannon I have had ordinary chicks win high awards at a latter time. I've also have outstanding chicks that didn't develop in to what I had hoped for.

If you want to get involved in Showing budgerigars, you need to let the chicks develop. Many show breeders won't let a chick go untill they are about 10 months old.

I think you need to be talking with your club members and getting some better advice with regard to keeping your show babies until they have shown how they will turn out. Pocket money isnt everything. A lot of show types babies take all of 8 months or more to show what they will turn out like. Selling them as nippers is way too soon.

all the breeder that i go to sell that baby that old

Its possible after breeding large numbers of budgies over many years that one can start to discern outstanding birds while still in the nest, and cull the rest as soon as they are safely eating and drinking, or even after the first moult to be a bit more certain.

But I agree with Kaz, if you are breeding for show and really only in the beginning stages, I would be holding on to birds for much longer to see how they turn out before considering selling them. Looks like you have some great stock to work with so I would be holding on to the chicks for now if I had your birds in my aviary!

When first breeding for show its a good idea to let more expereinced people help you cull, and after the first moult at least. If you cull so early you will never get to see how they turn out. A few surprise you. I have had some that looked nothing much in the nest and 8 months later looked brilliant. ;)

Shannon what I would do is wait atleast until the birds first moult before culling. they may look really terrible at 8 weeks old but once they moult through into new plumage they may suprise you. You do not want to sell a prize winning bird do you. If you cannot decide for yourself whether to keep or sell the baby you can ask someone on the forum if it is a good show bird or if it should be culled. I do the same thing, I ask a few friends which birds should be culled and which are good.
