Help, Air In Crop

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a chick 6 days old (my First). Its crop appears very full however it is alear and not the yellowish colour I have seen from photos and would expect when full of food.

I am concerned the chicks crop is full of air and not getting enough food. Unfortunately I was on holidays when the chick hatched 6 days ago and only returned today so I dont know if this is one off or a problem since it hatched.

Does any one have any suggestions, is this something to be concerned about or does it sort itself out. Any help much appreciated.

Lay the chick on it's back on the palm of your hand and with your forfinger and thumb tilt back the head.

With the forefinger and thumb of the other hand gently squease the crop. The chick should lift it's head and burp out the air.

Do not squease the contents of the crop up as it will sufacate the chick.

If this does not work. Get a sharp needle, disinfect it and puncture the crop with only one hole. the air will escape and the hole will close if the needle is sharp.

Only do this if all else fails.

Let us know how you go. There is an art to it.

You will need to do this many times as the chick need to learn how to eat food not air.
