When I bought this budgie, it is supposed to be a male but I am sceptical. What do you think? The one on the right (which you can only see its beak) is apparently a hen.

okay, now I am confused. To me, I would have said he was a hen. Firstly, because the cere appears brown and, secondly, I thought the cere should be showing signs of turning blue by now.

Your ideas are quite sound, but some mutations have obscure coloured ceres and this is one that often does.
