Sun And The Heat

Is it okay to have your birds outside in a large cage Dimensions: 60cm x 60cm x 168cm. in the full sun or is it considered cruel, they offcourse have water and top of cage roof provides shade. reason I ask somebody called the cops on me said there was dead birds because of the heat which was bs. plenty of food, plenty of water. water might be a bit warm but can;t help that would still be hot in shade.

Metal roof to the small aviary / cage would radiate heat...put it in the shade.

Do you mean one of those patio type aviaries with the slid roof on it? If they had shade from the roof then the person can't really call the cops, sounds like someone was just trying to get under your skin. Personally though I cover allmy outdoor aviaries with shade clothe or hose them down on hot days as they still can overheat even with shade

Metal roofs absorb a lot of heat and because few aviaries that have holes in them ('cause water would get in when it rains) the heat builds up and can kill your birds.

I know because a few years ago I lost many birds this way when my metal aviary was located in a full sun position. I learnt my lesson and moved the aviary under a tree and the shade protects them.

What did the cops say?

that there were dead birds which was bs and I should move them into the shade. well I will move them but there have been fine where they are.

Did the police go into your backyard to look at the birds, or were they just telling you what they had been told?

there out the front along side the house, they just showed up knocked at the door. said somebody called them and said there was dead birds. I said ummm no there isn;t and they said I should move them into the shade.

I would've just invited them out the back to see the birds and showed them that none were dead... that said, probably best if you don't want the police coming down every time its hot, to move it into a shady area...

place in shade. it you still think its to hot in the shade then place shadeclothe over the cage

If you bring inside birds outside in a cage/or larger aviary, always make sure there is a lock on the cage for their safetly, keep the top covered and make sure they are never in direct sun light, it is okay that they are outside on a hot day wild budgies live in the heat but make sure that our pet friends have fresh water at all times and are always in the shade, they should never be left outside unsupervised either.

there out the front so anybody that enters the front yard has access to them. they were in shade in the monring but got afternoon sun but anyway I went and moved them again to shade now they get no sun and then again the cops showed up again after I moved them today saying they got another phone call. its bs. I moved them like they asked and still on my case.

You need to show the police where your birds are located (that they are now located in the shade, that there are no dead birds) and inform them that you believe the matter to be a frivolous complaint. Yes, there is a lot of bs in this world, but it will not help you to get upset about it. Stay calm and prove to them otherwise. If you do this you will find that the police will be less inclined to bother you and more inclined to actually find out more detail about who is making the complaint, and the problem will be dealt with. Treat the police with simple respect instead of hostility because they are there to help and serve the public and keep the peace, and this is what you should expect of your police officers. If you help make their job and life easier, they will do the same for you.

It's really ironic that we get so many people moaning about perceived cruelty to their neighbors' pets and most of the time they do nothing about it except whinge a lot. And now one of members is being targeted by a concerned neighbor .... and there's not a whinge in sight. :parrot: It goes to show that calling the cops is a viable option ....

Since your birds are out the front where anyone can see them, hope you have padlocked the doors to your cage

Depends on if you set her up for breeding or it was a total surprise to you and she hasnt a nestbox. I assume you have a pair ? And a breeding cage ? and a a nestbox ? and they are old enough ?
yeah setup in a cage with breeding boxes 3 budgies 1 male 2 females, but might not be old enough yet. they are all like 3-4 months out of the nest this month. thats all the guy said. that i bought from.
Hope you have seperated your 4-5 mointh old pair who you have allowed to begin breeding

Could not agree more. I can only speak for myself, but in these instances its always best to get the police on side. I wouldn't get angry and upset, I'd open the door and say g'day, shake their hands and invite them in to look at the birds. While you're doing that explain that other officers have been around recently because of a complaint that was made against you in regards to the same matter. (chances are it won't be the same police unless you're in a small town) Show them your set up, explain to them what steps you take incase of hot temperatures.

I don't know but you could possibly call the R*P*A and explain to them what is happening, get them to come over and look at your setup, they might be able to give you a letter saying that they are housed appropriately and well cared for. Show that to the police next time they come around...

Just a couple of Ideas, the R*P*A might not do that sort of thing, I dunno, worth a try though...

I used to have a run (like an aviary for a dog :)) for my German Shephard, because she would jump the fence and go to the local swimming pool (bit obsessed with water) whenever we went out. An old couple lived next door to us for 6 years and we didn't have any problems, but when they left and the new people moved in, within a week we had compliant's. First they came to us and said that we shouldn't keep her locked up, even though there was plenty of room in there for her. we explained what she did and they left us alone for a while, but then one night there was a storm and she was barking and carrying on and the next day the cops came.

I got the R*P*A to come over and look at the run and the second the guy saw it he started laughing. and told me i could have had 5 great danes in there and it would still be fine. He even rang the police for me and told them. So you should definately give them a call.

there you go dragonx... the R*P*A are good for something
