Posted January 11, 200916 yr Can I do it? My mother in law (almost) wants chickens, but there isn't exactly much room in the yard that I think is appropriate for my birds.. Or could i have it somehow so that the chickens have a separate bit for during the day with grass and stuff but they can get in the aviary at night or something.. cos the aviary is gonna have a roof to keep everyone dry.. and i'm making it myself with my limited skills.. someone wanna design this thing for me?... if it's okay to have them together that is...
January 11, 200916 yr My concern would be if the chooks can get in at night then the budgies can get out. Our chook cage doors are open most of the day so theres no way we could keep budgies in there. Our chooks also chase birds so I don't know if they would get on with budgies anyway. My brother just lets his chooks run around the yard then locks them up in a really small cage overnight, perhaps you could do that and have the budgies in a seperate aviary.

I wouldn't. They require different care and chooks and budgies are susceptible to different ailments.
January 11, 200916 yr Author okay, i rethought it. I'm thinking, have the chooks on the grass and make them their own little house thing thats like.. chook sized.. for them to go in at night, but having the whole lot wired up so i can let them out when i'm out there, but they are locked up when i'm inside or away from the house, and then have my aviary on the verandah sorta where i've got my birds now.. or there is a bit at the end of the verandah that has the laundry window right there, so i could get into it from the house. I'd love to have my chooks just wandering around the yard, but my fiance and his mum both have cats that pretty much kill anything that moves.. and there has been a stray hanging around that looks just about hungery enough to kill a chook or two..
January 11, 200916 yr Sounds like a much better plan! :hi: Ours have an area that is enclosed with a 6 foot fence. On one side is our dogs area so we hope that she'll deter any cats or foxes from coming too close. That said we only let them out of their chook pen when we're home anyway. Let me tell you, fresh eggs are so much better than those from the supermarket!! My wife made the best pavlova she's ever made from our eggs for Xmas day!!
January 12, 200916 yr Author lol I know, Fresh eggs are awesome, thats the only reason mum-in-law wants them. I want them for my vegie patch, I used to have chickens when I lived with my parents and they kept all the bugs and stuff away.. Plus they are cute!! :fear
January 13, 200916 yr Author lol JB we haven't even got them yet. We won't get them for another couple of weeks yet. I'm making my aviary this weekend (hopefully) and then I'll get around to making something for the chooks next week sometime.. and then hopefully the lady I bought my ducks from last year will have a couple for me. We only want 1 or 2. my fiance has never had chickens before...
January 13, 200916 yr I love the silky chickens. They look great. but yeah any chook is good Not sure if Lisa would like them though...
January 13, 200916 yr Author I used to have four of those really little weird looking ones.. They were so funny. They followed me around the yard all the time and came when i called their names.. very clever little girls.
