Posted January 11, 200916 yr Today, my mother of all people, confessed that she isn't taking very good care of her birds. The hen has something very wrong with her feet part of her left foot her right foot When I went over there today I was devastated! These bird's used to be mine! and worst of all my mum didn't even tell me something was wrong with her, my dad did! Is there anything i can do to help the poor girl? and what should I do about the cock, Sam? He was my first bird and if anything happens to him because of my mum's neglect... this may seem dramatic but, I don't think I could ever talk to her again.. The other hen i gave her died the day she put them in the aviary. mum said it was from a spider bite.. which seemed plausible, so i let it go, but now... The aviary she has them in used to be a chicken coop, and then it had ducks in it. The ground is just dirt and straw and is fairly disgusting.. The chickens died and mum never told me how, I wasn't even in the state when it happened. and the duck's had mites. I sold the ducks when my parents were out of town and i said they escaped and there was nothing i could do to get them back.. I'm thinking I should take Sam to make sure he's alright. I just dunno what to do about the hen.. her left foot is really bad, the rest of it is like the black bit you can see.. and she can't even stand on a perch properly, Sam sit's behind her and she lean's on him. Is there anything a vet could do for her? I'm hopefully going to the vet on wednesday for Cloud's wing, should I take her in and see what they say? I can't believe my own mother could let this happen.. My poor baby's :hi:
January 11, 200916 yr I am sorry....there really is nothing you can do BUT take them to the vet as soon as possible. The infections are bad and may be necrotic...gangrene may be setting in. Urgent vet care is the only solution
January 11, 200916 yr Author I'm ringing the local vet tomorrow, i've heard the people on monday's are nicer.. Hopefully I can get someone to look at her and take care of Cloud's wing in the same trip.. Also, i'm going to get Sam and i'm goin to quarantine him. I hope He is okay. January 11, 200916 yr good luck with getting a vet appointment. I hope it all turns out good for you...
January 11, 200916 yr Good luck, I would try an avian vet before you go to just the local vet but if that is all that you have available then it will do. Keep us updated.
January 12, 200916 yr Author I took her in this afternoon. They had to put her to sleep. Her feet were heaps worse then I thought they were and apparently what the photo's made them seem. :fear My poor lil girl I've got Sam in quarantine. and told my mum that she isn't allowed to have anymore birds EVER until she looks after them properly. Now she just has her cat, which is perfectly fine..
