Well, it has been a while since i wrote anything in this thread or updated the info in here. It is 4th February, so the birds are on day 14 of Doxy treatment.

 

If you read back through this thread, or if you remember, i had puchased birds from many places, and one place was a pet shop. I purchased 3 birds from there - a mauve opaline hen, a grey opaline cock and a cinnamon wing sky blue cock. The hen and the cock both came from the same breeder.

 

Anyway, the hen seemed stressed once she was taken back to kaz's place, and we ended up seperating her from the other birds. She proceeded to go downhill fast. Her symptoms were a pooey bum, up-chucking, and then eventually after a day or two, she died.

 

I had bought the other 2 home with me and they were in quarantine. The sky blue bird was fine, with no visible signs of distress, however yesterday I noticed the grey cock was sitting on the bottom of hsi cage, fluffed up. I took him out of that cage, and into a hospital cage, with a lamp on him. I came home today from work to find him dead. I looked him over and he he same signs as the hen, pooey bum, and he obviously had been throwing up.

 

Now, they come from the same breeder, so my line of thinking is that this is where this disease strain comes from. Nothing had changed in the last few days, so it is interesting this just appeared. The though was could he have been allergic to the doxy treatment, but the fact that his sister had died that same way makes me think that there is something more there.

 

I have checked all the other birds, and there is no sign of illness.

 

It is sad, but in a way, I am glad this appeared now, rather than later. I am glad whatever thsi was flared now, rather when he had gone into the aviary. Personally this is the problem when you get birds without knowing the definitive source of the birds.

 

All my other birds are going well. My little spangle hen I purchased off Cec Gearing has really come along. She is thickened up, is bigger all over, and it learning to do the whole buffy head thing.

Glad everything else with the birds is going well.

Very sad about the grey cock Dave. You and I were worried about those in that quarantine cage, after the incident with the hen, but they seemed fine at the time.

I wonder if their immune system was down with megabacteria from whatever had occurred before you bought them.

Hoping for continued success with the others.....would love to see pictures of the little hen as she was such a baby when I saw her last....October hatching as I recall ?

The little lutino hen from Renee, for anyone who is wondering...was from a joint breeding project Renee and I had going. Her Dad is the opaline green dom pied in one of Dave's photos as he also went home with Dave. So....could the lutino hen be masking Dom Pied ?

I bought myself 2 showcages the other day, as you can see above. The first of many show cages I am thinking. Anyway, now i can get some pics in these show cages, my pics should be a little better.

Another update.

 

Birds are doing well.

 

In regard to quarantine, they did 2 weeks on doxy treatment, are currently doing 5 days of probiotic treatment.

 

I am going to camp for 3 days on Wenesday, so they will get normal water with no additives then. After that, when I come home, they will get wormed and lice treatment.

Well, I survived camp, but I think the birds missed me. One was a little unwell when I got back, but she is doing okay non.

 

They ahve done the doxy treatment, probiotics, they have been wormed and they are back on sparks to give thema little lift, before going into the aviary come Saturday or Sunday.

 

All looks good so far.

I was hoping for that as well Liv, but it seems that destiny is a cruel mistress.

 

I came home from camp and one hen was a bit off colour. I put her in a heat cage and she has perked up incredibly. Her pooey bum is gone, she is eating and biting well, and she will be good to go in a day or two.

 

Unfortunately, Caesr, my blue Cec Gearing bird, has come down with some illness. He has not been exposed to anything, he has been dry the whole time, he has gone through 28 days of treatments and was fine. Yesterday i noticed he had a pooey bum so he went into a hospital cage. Then when i came him from school, he was not even perching, so I took him straight to the vet. The vet is keeping him in for observation, they will get and run some poo samples, he has a few injections, but I need to know what he has, so I can treat the rest of them.

 

It is very strange that he has gone 28 days with no illness then he has come down like this on day 29.

 

I just hope that he is alright, and there is something that I can do for the rest of the birds.

apple cider vinagar,3 or 4 times a week,Mix rate of 10mils to 1 ltr of water.Garlic oil mixed in the seed once a week.When I buy a bird,it goes streight to the breeding box & I put one of my own birds with it,if they breed well & good,in most cases they don't.By puting one of my birds with it,its like a test sample,if it gets crook or vice the verca,I can do something about it.In all the time I have been doing this I only had one bird get crook.touch wood.

Whilst I do appreciate the advice, it is not jsut something I made up. I came home with 20 birds from 7 different locations. 2 had already been exposed to a sick bird so it was necessary to have them all go through treatment. Two birds who died of similar ailments were all from the same breeder, so I was worried about the others. To suggest putting each individual bird with another one of mine, no meds, coudl have meant that whoel flock was wiped out.

 

Before I decided in meds, I consulted with my avian vet, then breeders, both in person and on here.

 

To suggest they are over-medicated is not the most sensible suggestion I have ever heard.

 

Well, I have spoken with the vet this afternoon and I am told that he is better than he was. Feacal swabs revealed no cocci, no mega. He has responded well to antibiotics, so we will see how he goes again overnight there and i will call again tomorrow.

 

I hope that he is the only one unwell.

 

Tests show that there is no illness running through my birds, so it is environment, not a bug or virus. I thought it might be a draught I had not noticed before, so I increased cage coverage and covered the small door opening.

 

They are all doing a canker treatment for 7 days, as recommended by the vet, and Caesar, my Cec Gearing blue boy should be home Tuesday (would have been Monday but I have a school function tomorrow night so i cannot pick him up until Tuesday)

Well, I am thinking this remodelling has worked. Caesar has come home form the vets and it on antibiotics morning and nights. He seems better
