Posted January 11, 200916 yr Today, we got a baby budgie from the local market. It is so cute! It's in quarantine at the moment. Obviously i was going to fall in love with it the second i saw it.. :hap: and of course i'm gonna ask the newbie questions like, What gender is it? and colour? Technically it's my fiance's cos he's wanted a baby play with for ages, I'm just gonna be cleaning out the cage and making sure all is well.. just thinking though.. I look really tiny.. but maybe thats because i've never bought a budgie so young before.. The guy i bought it off said he was an aviary breeder and that he had heaps more to come.. should i buy them all?? lol
January 11, 200916 yr he is about 7 weeks old, and he is a light green boy. As temping as it is to buy them all, I say you should resist
January 11, 200916 yr Author lol, yea i think i will resist. i'm going to the shop i bought the rest of my birds from on Wednesday and I'll probably be getting wire and stuff to make my aviary on Thursday. I'm thinking of turning an old wardrobe into my aviary.. any ideas on how i would do that?.. Oh forgot to say, when we got him home he got out of the cage i'm borrowing off my mum. For some reason there is i little bit of wire missing and he is so tiny he got out through it. He went straight to the seed box lol poor lil guy must have been starving. He had water on the way home but i had no where to put seed.. Edited January 11, 200916 yr by Neat
January 11, 200916 yr Author oh yea, I'm also after any name suggestions I cant let my fiance name him. He names his pets the most unimaginative things.. His cat's name is puss.. Edited January 11, 200916 yr by sunshine*
January 11, 200916 yr  I know, I know, pick me, pick me!!! boots that way you have puss 'n boots  Edited January 11, 200916 yr by JimmyBanks
January 11, 200916 yr I love the fact that he got out of the cage and found the food. I think that is a good sniffer on him. I would call him something related to that like Hound, or Basset, or Beagle. I always like to name birds after personalities rather than appearance.
January 11, 200916 yr Author  JB that is exactly the sorter name he is not getting.. I like parsely Kaz, it's cute. Top runner is currently Cheeky, it's the first thing mum called him and i think it might stick..
January 11, 200916 yr JB love it Puss and boots We have a dog called JD and I wanted the other dog ( jake) to be called Coke but Nooooo no one saw the funny side of the dogs being called Jd & Coke LOL ......
January 11, 200916 yr You can tell on some of them... this one you can tell all around. Size, color, cere, body structure.... he actually looks just like my new little green guy I hatched out. He is just now 6 weeks old.... Best of luck with him either way... he's a doll. A good name for him would be TINKER (like the tiny little "tinker" workers in the TinkerBell Movie. Just my suggestion. Good luck on the name search. (I have an Opaline Green Male named Tinker)
January 12, 200916 yr Author aww, he is so cute Chrissy. It looks like we've named him Cheeky, unless my fiance comes up with something better... (which i really doubt is gonna happen.. ) He is great, but as the one htat cleans up all the birds mess I really am beggining to dislike him. (just a lil bit.. ) He gets in his seed bowl and kicks the seed out. When we first put him in the cage the dish had a cover/ood thing over it to stop such stupid things.. but he kept getting stuck in the bowl.. so i changed it to a bowl without a cover and I've only had a little bit of seed in it at a time. but he's still doing it. What can i do to stop him?! also got these one's  Didn't mean to have the camera that close to his bum.. but oh well. it's funny. bad photo of him upside down.. He was hot, so i gave him a bath. he loved it! lol Edited January 12, 200916 yr by sunshine*
January 12, 200916 yr Lots of young budgies do this for a number of reasons. Generally they do grow out of it... but it can take time. All I can suggest is changing the seed container, which you have done. You asked before about turning a dresser into a cage, if you look in our topics in the cage and aviary section, I'm sure you'll find some ideas there as I know some members have done similar before. Also... a suggestion if I may. As this adorable little guy is a... well... a guy... he should be easily tamed and even taught to speak (if you like), but I'd be removing his mirror. This will encourage him to bond to you and your fiance, rather then the 'friend in the mirror'. And lastly... he is adorable!!!!!! Congratulations
January 12, 200916 yr Author I'm trying to get my fiance to take the mirror out, but he's one of those guys' that won't take my advice. I'd remove it, but he'll just put it in again.. I'll have to show him that you said to remove it
January 12, 200916 yr I was wondering, it looks like your cage one of those round ones that you see canaries in? If so his foot can get stuck in the top of the cage where the bars taper together. Cage types can be found here: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=17858 the first one is the one that you have? I don't mean to come on here and offend you but it would be horrible for you if the little one got hurt. He is very beautiful! xoxo
January 12, 200916 yr Author Yeah, thats the cage. I've moved him out of it already. I have another cage that i got from my mum, but it hadn't been used for ages and hadn't been cleaned out for longer, by the look of it.. Anyway, I got it cleaned up this morning and used it to take mums bird to the vet. Poor girl I cleaned it up again when i got home and now have Cheeky in that.
January 14, 200916 yr Author more photo's. (I really don't have anything better to do with my time.. ) and i no longer have any control over what my fiance does and doesn't do with him. he's put him back in the little cage until next week, when he said he will buy him a bigger, better, less ugly one... upside down I really think i should use something better then photobucket.. It's been doing stupid stuff heaps the last few days... he's upside down in that one too.. hmm.. thought there was more then that... oh well. there will be!! lol
January 17, 200916 yr You can also tell a young budgie by The Eyes : Big Black button eyes which lacks iris rings ** You can guessitmate the age of budgies by their Iris to ( i did a post on that one ) Bars / Stripping : Extends down to the cere Cere/Beak Colour : This is debatable Mask Spots : Small elongated
January 18, 200916 yr so is it the more stripping down to the cere, does that mean its older? The stripes on the cap (forehead) help tell age, but some baby budgies dont develop dark stripes This baby is only 5 weeks old and has almost a pure white cap Edited January 18, 200916 yr by **Liv**
January 18, 200916 yr But its cap is still soft and babyish.... adult cap feathers seem to be really bright and kind of waxy/stiffer feathers if that makes sense Cosmo didn't have stripes all the way down to his cere when we got him which made me think he was older than he was. Now he is actually moulting and has a real cap I can tell the difference.
