Posted January 8, 200916 yr I had 2 budgies, Blueberry and Lemon, I knew Blueberry was definetly a male, but unfortunately he had to be put to sleep yesterday as he was violently ill..Still very upsetting.. Lemon is the only one I have left now, and I am confused on what gender it is, I refer Lemon as female because the Cere is usually a pinky/purple colour, but some days it looks alot more blue. I was wondering if you guys could give me some help? S/he is about 5 months old. Lemon is currently being treated for mites. Edited January 8, 200916 yr by Teagan
January 8, 200916 yr Lemon looks like a hen out of breeding condition in those photos. She is a recessive pied
January 8, 200916 yr Definately a "SHE". This is normal for young females to look like when not in breeding condition. I had a hen which looked like this for ages, until she was about 18 months of age. Every budgie is different, some get brown ceres as early as 3 to 4 months, others it takes a bit longer, and others just go pale white. Sorry for your loss. Edited January 8, 200916 yr by Kazzy
January 8, 200916 yr Author Thank you I had a feeling Lemon was female, just when the cere looked more blue it had me thinking again.
January 8, 200916 yr Blue cere doesn't automatically mean boy. A pale blue cere, a pastel blue cere, a whitish blue cere = girl. Boys are a very deep vivid dark blue, or purple, or sometimes pink, but it is usually a deep and even colour all over. Girls' ceres are much paler, but often blue too. I agree Lemon seems to be a girl although I am not all that experienced with sexing pieds.
